Located in a 100ft deep valley on Margam mountain, its secluded position has drawn in visitors from across the world, who hope to catch a glimpse of this natural Welsh gem. Sign up for The Sun newsletter Thank you! But now, tourists have been warned to stay away from the area, following overwhelming visitor numbers and concerns of people swimming at the site. Leisure Estate Investments – which has owned the reservoir since 2024 – even introduced a £2 charge per visit as a “temporary deterrent”, as well as installing barriers on its dam face. Complaints include issues with traffic and littering, with reports of visitors fly-tipping, trespassing and damaging structures around the site. The reservoir is a former 19th Century colliery that was flooded and repurposed to supply water to Port Talbot Docks. The area remains “vital” for flood protection and has a “unique ecosystem” that is currently suffering as a result of the rubbish left on the site. Reports of visitors paddleboarding and walking along the dam face also pose “inherent safety risks”, given the depth and exceptionally cold temperature of the water.
