TOTTENHAM have confirmed that Gary Mabbutt is “recovering well” after suffering a leg injury following a fall earlier this week. Their former captain, 64, was hospitalised after being involved in a “serious accident” in South Africa. Sign up for the Football newsletter Thank you! “He is recovering well and resting at the family home in Johannesburg awaiting medical clearance to fly back home.” Mabbutt played more than 600 times for Tottenham between 1982 and 1998 and is second on the club’s all-time appearance list. The ex-defender now works as a club ambassador and since the first Covid lockdown has been regularly phoning elderly supporters to check in on them. Tottenham added: “Today, he is back making his daily birthday phone calls to elderly supporters – incredible! “Gary would like us to convey his thanks to all our fans around the world for sending well wishes in recent days.” In his initial Facebook post on the situation, Hazard revealed that Mabbutt would not be able to fly until the 24th at the earliest.
