He scored 30 goals in 39 games as the club won promotion to the First Division in 1966. Nicknamed “Big Chiv,” he netted 174 goals in 367 games across eight seasons at White Hart Lane. It makes him the club’s fourth-highest scorer ever, behind only Harry Kane, Greaves and Bobby Smith. He won the League Cup twice and was the breakout star as Spurs won the first-ever UEFA Cup in 1972, scoring in both legs of the final against Wolves. Most read in Sport Chivers also won 24 caps for England and scored 13 goals under World Cup-winning boss Sir Alf Ramsey. He left Tottenham for Swiss side Servette Geneva in 1976, before further spells at Norwich, Brighton, Dorchester Town and Barnet. He retired from football in 1983 but stayed close to Spurs, working as a club ambassador and matchday hospitality host. He also ran the Brookmans hotel in Hertfordshire between 1983 and 1996, and did occasional TV punditry. Chivers is survived by his second wife Julia, whom he wed in 1975, sons Nick and Luke, and daughters Andrea and Melanie. Tottenham led tributes to their former star calling the forward “one of the all time greats.” Former team-mate Pat Jennings said: “He was such a lovely fellow. He was like a brother. We thought the world of each other and then, wow, what a player. “The whole team was really close. Just the goals he scored in so many matches… and in the big, important games as well.” Ex-Barcelona and Tottenham striker Steve Archibald called the forward a “Rolls-Royce”. He said: “Watched the great Martin Chivers before I became a pro, was an amazing watch. “He was like (a) Rolls-Royce, so smooth in his movement, excellent in the air and a great finisher, but on top of all of that he was a really nice guy.” Comment now
