Tottenham 5 Charlton 1: £85million Savio shines on debut as Spurs get over woeful Brentford loss in style

SAVIO sparkled on his debut as he scored and assisted from the bench as Tottenham thrashed Charlton. The Brazilian, who arrived from Manchester City for £85million this week, showed off his dancing feet as he masterminded two goals in quick succession. Tottenham are on the back of two dismal domestic campaigns and something has had to change in North London. Turns out breaking the bank to bring in a host of new star players could be the answer. New £85m midfielder Mateus Fernandes also made his full debut, while there wasn’t even space in the matchday squad for £100m man Sandro Tonali and fellow new arrival Marcos Senesi. But it was Savio, who failed to impress often at City, was the star of the show following his 70th-minute introduction. His contribution helped Spurs win just their second domestic game at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in over EIGHT MONTHS. Nathan Jones’ visiting Charlton side paled in comparison, not least because the Addicks boss had made ten changes to his side that beat West Ham at the weekend. Former Southampton chief Jones was hoping to rest most of his stars for their Championship clash with Preston this weekend, but was forced to introduce Danny McNamara and skipper Lloyd Jones after just 15 minutes. Centre-back partnership Collins Sichenje and Billy Koumetio were both forced off with injuries. Koumetio hobbled off holding his hamstring after treatment from a Charlton physio, while Sichenje was seemingly inconsolable as he was taken off on a stretcher following an innocuous knock in the box. Despite Tottenham’s squad being laden with newly-acquired firepower, it was academy ace Mikey Moore that got things kicking. The wideman, who spent last season on loan with Rangers, cut in from the right flank and unleashed a venomous strike that left Brooks helpless. Moore is expected to join German side Cologne before the window closes next week, especially following the signings of Savio and Marmoush. Moore’s goal kicked Spurs into life, and the hosts had doubled their lead through Dominic Solanke just four minutes later. It meant Spurs were cruising 2-0 up at half-time and if Charlton’s attention wasn’t already on Saturday’s game against Preston, it was now. Any hope of a dramatic comeback was killed by substitute Kevin Danso, who rose up to nod home a floated free-kick with his first touch of the game. Even with three goals flying in, perhaps the loudest cheer of the night came when Savio was introduced for a 20-minute debut cameo. Savio, who no longer wants to be referred to as Savinho, wriggled his way into space off the right wing and fired into the bottom corner. The fifth goal was all of his own making too, the winger twisted and turned in the box before his shot bounced off Ben Davies and went in the back of the net. Charlton hit back with a consolation goal through Lloyd Jones, but Savio had already put the Addicks to bed. The new arrival has certainly got Spurs fans excited about what could come in the next few month and helped them forget all about their woeful defeat to Brentford at the weekend.
