The former top cop is accused of having a sexual relationship with a more junior officer while serving as chief constable. He is further alleged to have had sex with another junior officer while on duty earlier in his policing career. Details of the allegations emerged after the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) launched a gross misconduct investigation into his behaviour. The misconduct notice alleges that Mr Chilton abused “his position for a sexual purpose having a sexual relationship with an officer while chief constable and failed to declare this relationship”. He is also accused of failing to “disclose a previous sexual relationship with another officer during the application process to become chief constable”. Investigators allege that he “repeatedly and dishonestly” denied the allegations when questioned by senior figures in the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner. Most read in The Sun Hampshire Police and Crime Commissioner Donna Jones met Mr Chilton at her home in November 2024 to discuss his future. The pair met again at police headquarters on February 12, 2025, before Ms Jones made a formal referral to the IOPC on February 26, 2025. Mr Chilton is due to face a formal misconduct hearing in October, where the allegations against him will be formally considered. Explaining why the former officer received the substantial sum after resigning, a police spokesperson confirmed the payment details. “On Mr Chilton’s resignation, he received £55,154 as Pay in Lieu of Notice (as opposed to him working the three month period in his contract),” the spokesperson said. A former detective, Mr Chilton spent around 33 years in policing after joining the service at the age of 18. He landed the top job in Hampshire in February 2023, transferring back to the force after serving as chief constable in Dorset from August 2021. Following his sudden resignation, Alexis Boon has replaced Mr Chilton as Chief Constable of Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) are investigating the claims. Director Derrick Campbell, previously said: “Any allegations involving officers abusing their position for a sexual purpose are taken extremely seriously. “At the end of our investigation, we found evidence to indicate that the former chief constable’s conduct may have breached the police standards of professional behaviour. “We have decided that Mr Chilton should face a disciplinary hearing. It will now be for the PCC to arrange these proceedings in due course, where a disciplinary panel will then determine, based on the evidence, whether the gross misconduct allegations are proven.”
