Top British homeware chain launches ‘everything must go’ sale as it closes 23 stores in scramble to cut costs

A MAJOR homeware chain has launched a huge closing down sale at a popular branch. Topps Tiles will shutter a store in Cheam, Greater London on August 7. It will come as a blow to shoppers who in the past described the store as “great” and praised its “helpful” staff members. The store is one of 23 branches the brand said would close. Back in April, bosses said they would shut the near two dozen stores as part of “significant self-help measures”. Eight have already closed with the remaining 15 being shut over the next six months. Speaking at the time, Topps Tiles chief executive Alex Jensen said: “In light of subdued consumer sentiment and geopolitical uncertainty as well as the cumulative impact of cost inflation, the management team is implementing a targeted programme of self-help measures weighted towards the second half. News of the closures will come as a blow to shoppers who have seen dozens of their favourite brands vanish from local high streets.
