Tony Mundine dead aged 75: Tributes pour in as legendary boxer with 64 KOs and 80 wins dies after heart attack

AUSTRALIAN boxing legend Tony Mundine has died at the age of 75 following a heart attack. Mundine fought in four weight divisions and ended his career with 80 wins, with 64 of those coming by knockout. Mundine retired from boxing in 1984 before working as a coach to his son Anthony, who started off in the NRL before also becoming a boxer. Sign up for the Sport newsletter Thank you! Anthony was a former IBO middleweight world champion who won 48 fights, with 11 defeats. Mundine’s grandson Rahim has also started a career and fought in Australia just days ago. According to Code Sports, Mundine died in hospital surrounded by his family. Tributes poured in across the sport, with Australian former undisputed lightweight champ George Kambosos Kr calling him a “great man”. He wrote on X: “Rest in peace to an absolute Australian boxing legend, Tony Mundine. “A sad day in Australian sport, some great memories at the old Eveleigh Street boxing gym in Redfern sparring Choc with Tony always in his corner. A great man. One said: “RIP Tony… the night you fought Carlos Monzón is part of Australian Boxing History. My Dad told me about that fight & your record in Aus! You will be missed.” Another added: “Wow, I’m really shocked. RIP thanks for the memories Tony. One of the best middlweights of his time.” A third commented: “Very sad news of the passing of Tony Mundine. Only 75 and has always appeared strong and healthy. A great loss to Australian boxing and proud indigenous Australian. RIP.” Mundine, who was the first Australian to compete in for weight classes, won the Australian middleweight title in 1970.
