It’s been a busy moment for the IP, as there are a few games planned in that franchise. In addition to Catalyst, Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is scheduled for release in February 2027. On top of that, the next Tomb Raider release after Catalyst was announced, which will help us fans better understand the timeline of the series and all of Lara Croft’s adventures. Now, it seems we may be getting access to Tomb Raider: Catalyst sooner than expected, in spite of the recent delay. According to a new report by Polygon, which analyzed Embracer’s latest earnings reports, the game will be released in its 2027-2028 fiscal year. This means that, at the latest, Catalyst will be released by April 2028, which is the end of the fiscal year for the company. For reference, the game was first expected to arrive in 2027, following The Legacy of Atlantis’s release in 2026, but both games were pushed back in July. The delay of Tomb Raider: Catalyst is a direct consequence of the delay of Legacy of Atlantis. Because the latter was planned for this year but was then pushed back to 2027, Embracer Group decided to delay Tomb Raider: Catalyst as a means of spreading out releases within the IP and not have a conflicting release schedule for the IP – and, of course, to continue pushing toward fiscal gains year-on-year. While it was known that Catalyst would be released in 2028, we now have confirmation that it will happen within the first four months of the year. Because of this delay, however, it also likely means Catalyst won’t get a physical media release – at least for PlayStation consoles. This is because Sony has announced that it will end the production of physical PlayStation games by February 2028. If Tomb Raider: Catalyst is released after that, it’s likely PS5 owners won’t be able to purchase a physical edition of the game. Tomb Raider: Catalyst has been described as the “biggest” Tomb Raider game ever made by Crystal Dynamics, meaning that its scale will surpass that offered by titles like Tomb Raider (2013), Rise of the Tomb Raider, and Shadow of the Tomb Raider. From what we’ve seen so far, there may be platform jumping in this new title, which may be indicative of its size. There are huge hopes for this new iteration of Lara Croft and what it could represent for the IP in a new setting. We’ll still have to wait well over a year to see it, but we will be able to play Legacy of Atlantis in the meantime, once it releases in February 2027. Even so, with Legacy of Atlantis being a remake of the first title in the series, all eyes will be on the upcoming release of Tomb Raider: Catalyst in early 2028 to see what’s next.
