Tom Holland's Fred Astaire Biopic Officially Finds the Perfect Ginger Rogers

Sign in to your Collider account Tom Holland, fresh off the two-billion-dollar box office bonanza of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, is planning to step into the dance shoes of one of the biggest legends of Hollywood's Golden Age. The British star, who is also a trained dancer, has planned to star in a biopic of celebrated Hollywood hoofer Fred Astaire for some time now, but the project has remained in development. Now, it's taken one big step forward with the casting of two key roles. Astaire's career, which began on stage and eventually transitioned to the then-nascent art form of film and later television, spanned 76 years. He began his career in vaudeville with his sister, Adele Astaire, as his dance partner. When she left show business, he found another partner in Ginger Rogers, who he danced with in classic films like Top Hat, Swing Time, and Shall We Dance. However, Astaire's talent wasn't limited to his feet; he earned fame for his performances in Holiday Inn, Funny Face, and The Towering Inferno, the latter of which earned him his only Oscar nomination. Now, the Astaire biopic has cast his two greatest partners. Margaret Qualley will star as Adele Astaire, while Sabrina Carpenter will play Ginger Rogers. Qualley has made a name for herself with showy roles in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Maid, and The Substance. Carpenter, meanwhile, is best known as a pop star, having topped the charts with singles like "Espresso," "Please Please Please," and "Manchild," but also has a lengthy acting resume, having starred on the sitcom Girl Meets World for three seasons. This will be her most prominent film role to date, however. The as-yet untitled movie will be directed by Paul King (Paddington), with Astaire's grandson, Tyler McKenzie, serving as a consultant and co-producer.
