Tom Hardy Explains MobLand Season 2's Major Harry Change

The Oscar nominee co-leads the Guy Ritchie-produced crime series as the fixer of the Harrigan crime family in North London, who balances keeping them in power, while also trying to manage his tricky relationships with his wife and teenage daughter. MobLand season 2 picks up shortly after the season 1 finale, with Harry and Joanne Froggatt's Jan dealing with the fallout from her stabbing him, and multiple new threats setting their sights on the Harrigans. Ahead of the show's September 18 premiere, ScreenRant's Grant Hermanns interviewed Tom Hardy to discuss MobLand season 2. When asked how the new season changes Harry, Hardy began by acknowledging one of the character's key elements is that he "is often five steps ahead of people," having a unique "ability to prepare" for anything, even if "a situation is somewhat kinetic": Tom Hardy: So, in season 1, he gets out ahead of problems, he can put out fires with a little bit more process time. Season 2 was Jez had the idea to disband everybody, to pull them back together in the face of a fearless adversary who was much more dangerous, and that was possibly led by a figure who was left as a looming shadow in season 1. However, as the stakes get higher in MobLand season 2, the Oscar nominee teases that the show has "never been as kinetic," teasing that there's "a game at play" and a "false sense of security" for both the Harrigan and Da Souza families. Hardy further teased that the latter family dynamic is "falling apart," particularly with Teddie Allen's Gina now "coming of age" and going down a similar path as her father and "further compacted by who she walks with": Tom Hardy: What was interesting in this, and what I think Guy and Jez were very clear about, episodically, was how little lead time Harry was allowed to have to prepare in that aspect, for what was inevitably coming. So, he's on the back foot, and still manages to process, so he was harried in many aspects. So, in that aspect, we still didn't see him react. So we see him still respond under duress, and in a more expedient manner, of which is inconvenient, with his team spread to the wings and all four corners of the globe. Much to Hardy's point, Harry is one of the calmest figures in MobLand's cast, even with the various threats thrown his way. Unlike some of his more theatrical roles, the Harrigan family fixer never shouts, never lets his visual energy spike and is often shown quietly observing menacing conversations instead of engaging. This is all the more notable in the season 1 finale after Jan inadvertently stabs him during an argument, in which he still remained composed and assured her everything was okay. As such, the fact that Hardy teases MobLand season 2 is going to actually put Harry on the back foot for much of its run points to just how intense the proceedings are going to be. The marketing has already teased that the new season will see the Harrigans actively going to war, though unlike season 1 seeing them contending with only the Stevenson family, there are multiple players with their sights set on the North London crime family.
