TOM CRUISE’s youngest daughter Suri is proving she’s a class act as she appears in her debut stage role on UK shores. The wannabe thesp is following in the famous footsteps of her father and movie star mum Katie Holmes. She features in a quirky retelling of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival — which had just 33 punters in the audience for its first showing. Sign up for the Showbiz newsletter Thank you! Suri kicked off her fortnight-long stint in the production, titled Midsummer!, at Bijou at Assembly in the city’s famous St Andrew Square. It has been revealed she has dropped her dad’s surname, Cruise, amid their estrangement, replacing it with her mother’s middle name, Noelle, in a bid to carve out a career in her own right. She was originally kept off the cast list for Midsummer! online, but in the official programme, Suri Noelle is credited as playing Helena, one of the show’s four young lovers, as well as a fairy called Thisbe and, oddly, a flute and a mustardseed. A source in the crowd said: “It was an intimate show, but it was really well received. “There was a standing ovation at the end and Suri was brilliant. “The production was pretty camp and she had a hilarious scene where she tried to seduce the character Demetrius, which involved her crawling along the floor to him before they gave each other a peck. Most read in Showbiz “But it wasn’t anything like the Hollywood productions her family are used to. “The venue was small, so she basically had to stand behind the crowd whenever she wasn’t on stage. “She is determined to work from the ground up and learn her craft the proper way. She doesn’t want any special treatment.” Another sign outside gave trigger warnings for strobe lighting, adult themes, smoke/haze, loud noises and, perhaps most frightening of all, audience participation. Tickets for the 90-minute opening performance on Thursday cost £11.25, but prices rise to £18.50 from today. Suri stars in the production alongside her fellow students from Carnegie Mellon University in Pennsylvania. She is studying musical theatre at drama school there, so the West End may well beckon before long. Suri had a good relationship with her dad until her parents split when she was six. It is believed Mission: Impossible star Tom distanced himself from both her and her mum due to them no longer being involved in the Church of Scientology, which he is a member of. But now Suri is thriving and has two weeks in Scotland to catch some culture. There’s one particular production at the Fringe which she may want to catch in her downtime. Less than a mile away as the crow flies is Russian-British comedian Olga Koch, who is doing a show called Fat Tom Cruise. I’m sure she’ll find it a hoot. Comment now
