Tom Cruise drops rare detail about mysterious film Digger: ‘I’ve never seen anything like it’

The 64-year-old stars in Oscar-winning director Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s mysterious black comedy Digger, playing the world’s most powerful man as he attempts to convince humanity he’s its saviour before a disaster of his own making destroys everything. And judging by Cruise’s enthusiasm at the film’s London premiere on Tuesday night, it’s unlike anything he’s experienced before. ‘That character – I’ve never seen anything like it. I’ve never read anything like it. It was so much fun,’ he told Metro and other outlets. Cruise underwent a dramatic transformation for the role, wearing extensive prosthetics that initially took six hours to apply before he challenged the makeup team to reduce the process to under an hour. While details about the film remain closely guarded, the actor was delighted to share one particularly impressive technical achievement. The monologue is one take,’ he revealed of a scene filmed in a single, uninterrupted shot. Asked whether he really meant just one take, he clarified: ‘One shot. We did it three times, two or three times.’ He’d already begun walking away when he turned back to elaborate, apparently unable to resist sharing another detail about the filmmaking process. His enthusiasm was infectious, although his co-stars proved rather more determined to protect the film’s secrets. Indeed, getting information out of the cast was almost as difficult as getting onto the red carpet, where security was stricter than Heathrow, complete with sniffer dogs and multiple checkpoints. Asked exclusively by Metro whether he could offer just one word that would make sense to audiences after watching Digger, Michael Stuhlbarg delivered an admirably efficient response. UK & Ireland) ‘No.’ After a little encouragement, he eventually relented, describing the film as ‘as crazy as the world’, as well as ‘unusual’, ‘surprising’ and ‘great fun.’ He was more forthcoming about working with Cruise and Iñárritu, explaining that their intense approach was rooted in creating an environment where the cast could experiment. ‘They’re serious about their art, but in this case, the art is play too,’ he said. ‘There’s great play in this, serious overtones, but also great ridiculousness as well.’ Sandra Hüller, meanwhile, revealed that Digger was the biggest production she’d ever worked on, with enormous sets constructed entirely inside studios. The German actress also praised his dedication, explaining that despite his considerable star power, his attention was firmly on the film and his fellow actors. ‘He would never make it this whole shooting about himself, but all about finding the right tone and to go to the boundaries that we sometimes cross,’ she said, describing his approach as ‘very inspiring’. Riz Ahmed, meanwhile, arrived with his mother, who apparently had her own reasons to be excited about the evening. ‘I think she’s, you know, a Tom Cruise fan, like everyone,’ he laughed when asked who she was most looking forward to seeing. ‘That’s the amazing thing about Tom. He’s adored across generations,’ Ahmed continued, adding that Cruise ‘unites the world’ through his films.
