Browns681/68Cleveland Browns training camp, August 1, 2026By Mary Kay Cabot, cleveland.comBEREA, Ohio — Todd Monken met with Quinshon Judkins about lighting up an unsuspecting Mike Hall Jr. on Saturday in a non-padded practice, acknowledging it “was a mistake.”During an 11-on-11 period with Shedeur Sanders as the starting quarterback, Hall disengaged from left guard Zion Johnson on a pass play and was almost doubled over when Judkins stormed in and pancake blocked him hard with his forearms onto his back. Is it all in the name of football? “Well, no,” Monken said Monday. “In the heat of the moment, what happened on the practice field -- and I’ve met with Quinshawn about it -- there is a certain amount of regret at the moment when it happens. But we are all human and we do make mistakes.“And that’s what I always tell our team. I said, ”You’ve got to fight to not get hijacked emotionally in a highly emotional game for all of us, whether it’s in our work or emotional or our personal lives, try not to get hijacked emotionally.Latest on Browns training camp, Guardians at the trade deadline: Monday’s Sports 4 CLEBrowns reporters are finally getting real answers, and the difference is strikingBrowns training camp schedule and what to know for Monday, Aug. 3“But to me, where you go from here is we are human. I said this the other day. We’re going to fall short. Are you going to own it? And then are we going to fix it?” And that’s just a speed bump. That’s all it is. It was a mistake.” It was a chippy practice overall, with the first fight of camp breaking out midway through. A few offensive and defensive linemen threw punches, and much of the rest of the team joined in. “Well, I don’t think I’ve ever been through a camp where there hasn’t been a scuffle,” Monken said. “We’ve got prideful guys, guys that love to compete, love to practice, and that’s going to happen. I mean, it’s a physical sport. You’re going to have those pop up every now and then.”The intensity ratchets up even more today when the pads come on for the first time. Dillon Gabriel in line for more repsDillon Gabriel, who’s stacked good days in camp, will likely be rewarded with more reps going forward. The unfortunate thing for Gabriel is that Monken had to narrow down the quarterback competition to Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders to get them ready to play, and Gabriel wasn’t considered part of the battle for the starting job. But if he continues to play like this, he could make the roster as the third quarterback. Question is, will he be in line for the backup job?“At some point when you start in the spring or some point in the spring in the fall, you have to set some form of a depth chart in terms of reps,” Monken said. “That’s just the way it goes. And I said it the other day, the player, everybody’s competing, but you’re not guaranteed the same amount of reps. “So it’s up to the player to take advantage and maximize those reps, which I feel like Dillon has done. So we’ll see as we move forward. If that continues, we’ll continue to up his reps. I mean, he’s earned that. That’s what every player should expect, right? If they play well, you have to up their reps or what’s the purpose of playing well?”Carson Schwesinger out again with minor injuries Schwesinger missed practice for the second straight day.“He will not be back,” Monken said. “He’s dealing with little minor injuries, so he will not be back today.”Mary Kay Cabot has more than 30 years experience covering the Cleveland Browns for The Plain Dealer and cleveland.com, and became only the second female in Pro Football Hall of Fame history to win the Bill Nunn...
