Titchfield advance from daCosta Cup group

(Photo: Paul A Reid) TITCHFIELD High advanced to the second round of the ISSA daCosta Cup football competition for the third-consecutive season after beating Iona High 7-2 in their Zone I game at Rio Bueno playing field on Wednesday. Roje Williams scored a hat-trick to lead Titchfield to their fourth-straight win, joining St Mary High as the automatic qualifiers from the zone, both on 12 points. Titchfield went into the game needing only a draw to make progress after St Mary had booked their spot a day earlier, but they overran third-placed Iona. Brown’s Town High, meanwhile, hammered Discovery Bay High 12-0 to maintain their lead in Zone C ahead of Ferncourt High who stayed perfect with a 1-0 win over Marcus Garvey Technical. Javier Henry and Jamaal Johnson both scored hat-tricks for Brown’s Town while Caen Benjamin, Basil Trail, and Onardo Flowers all scored braces as the team recorded their fourth win. Ferncourt stayed in contention with their fourth-straight win as the two teams lead the race for the automatic qualifying spots. Irwin High and St James High both continued their unbeaten runs in Zone A with wins over Herbert Morrison Technical and Spot Valley High, respectively. Both are on 12 points, six more than third-placed Muschett High, with all three teams having played four games. Irwin beat Herbert Morrison 2-0, with Jhemar Roswell scoring from about 23 yards in the first half to give the home team the lead before Cavon Morris added a second in the 52nd minute. St James edged Spot Valley 1-0. Central High took over the lead in Zone G after edging high-flying Denbigh High 1-0 in their top-of-the-zone clash, moving to 10 points and breaking a three-way tie for first place with Lennon High and Denbigh High. Knox College, meanwhile, continued their good run in Zone F with a 2-0 win over Alphansus Davis to stay on top with 13 points, moving closer to a second-round spot. Holmwood Technical stayed in contention with a 4-1 win over Troy High. Mile Gully took over the lead in Zone E after beating Cross Keys High 6-0, jumping ahead of Bellefield High and Porus High, while Foga Road threw their name into the mix with a 3-1 win over Winston Jones High. Lacovia High moved past Black River High into second place in Zone D after beating BB Coke High 3-0, accumulating 12 points, the same as Black River, but with a better goal difference. Munro College leads with 15 points from five wins.
