Tigers To Select John Peck

The Tigers are calling up infield prospect John Peck from Triple-A Toledo, reports Emily Waldon of Baseball America. Detroit will have to make transactions on both the 26-man and 40-man rosters to formally select Peck’s contract. Peck, 24, was the Tigers’ seventh-round pick out of Pepperdine back in 2023. He’s a quality defensive shortstop who can also handle second or third base and is in the midst of a nice season at the plate. Peck has played at four levels in 2026, including a brief pair of injury rehab stints at Class-A and High-A. He’s spent the bulk of the year in Double-A but recently moved up to Triple-A, where he’s clobbered opposing pitchers through his first five games (hitting .500 with a home run in 19 plate appearances). Overall, in 69 games and 293 plate appearances, Peck has slashed .286/.336/.504 with 11 homers, 19 doubles, three triples, 22 steals (in 28 attempts), a 6.5% walk rate and a 24.9% strikeout rate. MLB.com ranks Peck 20th among Tigers farmhands. He’s 25th at Baseball America and 27th at FanGraphs. Scouting reports on the 6′, 185-pound infielder tout his glovework at shortstop and knack for making hard contact. He’s an above-average runner with a bit of power but a free-swinging approach at the plate that undercuts his pop and penchant for strong contact. Peck is prone to chasing and has just a 73% contact rate in the minors this season — well below the 77.8% major league average. Peck will probably be fairly susceptible to strikeouts and struggle to keep his on-base percentage up, but a good shortstop with some speed and pop can settle in as a nice utilityman who’s capable of backing up at multiple spots. He’s a right-handed bat, too, which is a nice perk for a club that’s currently a bit deeper in left-handed bats (Riley Greene, Kevin McGonigle, Max Clark, Kerry Carpenter, Colt Keith, Zach McKinstry). The Tigers would’ve needed to add Peck to the 40-man roster this offseason anyhow, as he’d otherwise have been eligible for the Rule 5 Draft. That’s also true of fellow infield prospect Max Anderson, who could also get his first call to the majors soon, with rosters set to expand to 28 tomorrow. Anderson has the more impressive minor league stat line (.307/.391/.507) and is considered the better offensive prospect of the two, but he’s limited to second base with the glove and is considered to be a below-average defender there.
