Veteran catcher Carlos Perez is headed back to the Tigers on a minor league deal, as relayed in a transactions update from Matt Eddy at Baseball America. Perez split the 2026 campaign between the Tigers’ and Astros’ Triple-A affiliates. Perez, who turned 36 yesterday, has been in four different organizations over the past three seasons. He hasn’t received a big-league call at any of those stops. Houston signed him last offseason as a depth option behind Yainer Diaz and Christian Vazquez. Diaz missed time with an oblique strain over the summer, but it was César Salazar who got the call to replace him. Houston released Perez in mid-June. After a brief stint in the Mexican League, he signed with the Tigers. Perez got off to a blazing start with Triple-A Toledo, hitting .351 with seven homers in his first 12 games. An ankle injury in early August cut his season short. It was only a 69-game sample, but Perez did finish with a 108 wRC+ and 15 homers in the minors this year. Perez will reprise his role with the Mud Hens in 2027. He hasn’t reached the majors since 2023 with the Athletics. His 68 games with the club that season marked his first big-league opportunity since 2018. Perez has a .592 OPS across 859 MLB plate appearances. He was a plus behind the plate early in his career, but had a poor defensive season with the A’s. The Tigers dealt longtime backup Jake Rogers this past season, but Eduardo Valencia has emerged as a solid option behind starter Dillon Dingler. Prospects Josue Briceno and Thayron Liranzo are also looming in the minors. It’s a sturdy depth chart, which means Perez likely needs an injury (or three) to get an opportunity with the Tigers.
