Three cases booked after student groups clash at JNTU Hyderabad

File | Photo Credit: SIDDHANT THAKUR A clash between two groups of students at Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University Hyderabad (JNTUH) during Teej celebrations on Thursday (September 3, 2026) night left several students injured and led to a protest at the university’s main gate.The trouble began around 9 p.m. on Thursday after a third-year mechanical engineering student allegedly made objectionable remarks about a female student. When her friends confronted him, an argument broke out and turned physical, police said.The situation escalated again after midnight, with students from the Gautami and Manjeera hostels attacking each other with sticks and resorting to stone-pelting. The clashes continued into the early hours of Friday, following which students gathered at the university’s main gate demanding action against those involved.KPHB police reached the campus after receiving a Dial-112 emergency call and intervened to bring the situation under control. Three cases were registered in connection with the incident.One case was based on the complaint of the female student, while a counter-case was registered following a complaint from the other group. Police also registered a suo motu case for allegedly obstructing police personnel from discharging their duties during the protest. The police took 16 students into custody. They were later served notices and let off.JNTUH officials said they have constituted an internal review committee to examine the incident and take disciplinary action against students found responsible.
