A video of a group demolishing an under-construction structure and attacking those attempting to stop them has gone viral. The group attempting to stop the demolition contained women as well, including one holding a child. Allegedly, this video is from Bangladesh and shows a group of Muslim men forcibly trying to seize a Hindu family’s land.India Today Fact Check found that the video is not from Bangladesh but from Assam, and that the clash was not communal.OUR PROBEA reverse image search of frames from the viral video led us to a post on an Assam-based Facebook page, dated July 29. According to the caption, the clash broke out in Uchatari village, Gossaigaon subdivision, Assam, over a long-standing land dispute between two groups led by Nurul Khan and Gani Sheikh. A further keyword search revealed video reports about the clash by local news outlets, including Headline 8, Pratibimba Live, and Assam Talks Live. According to these reports, Gani Sheikh's group attempted to demolish the under-construction house of Nurul Khan, built under the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana - Gramin. Nurul Khan's family alleged that Gani Sheikh and his group attacked their under-construction house, physically assaulted them, and attempted to seize their land. The family has demanded an investigation and strict action against Sheikh and his associates. Following the incident, police registered an FIR against Sheikh and his group.India Today Fact Check reached out to Narayan Boro, the officer-in-charge at the Gossaigaon police station. He confirmed that neither the aggressors nor the victims were Hindu. He added that the FIR named five people: Gani Sheikh, Rafikul, Bashidul, Ajimul, and Sonapakhi Miyan. Thus, it is clear that a video from Assam was falsely given a communal spin and misattributed to Bangladesh.- EndsPublished By: Pathikrit SanyalPublished On: Aug 4, 2026 19:07 IST
