This SUV has a second floor, a bed and floor heating

Xiaomi has unveiled an SUV that takes interior space to another level, literally, with a second-floor loft, beds, floor heating and a host of home-like features.Most SUVs give you more space inside. Xiaomi’s latest goes a step further, quite literally. The new Xiaomi SkyNomad N90 Max Studio comes with a factory-fitted electric lifting roof that creates a second floor inside the SUV, turning it into a mobile loft complete with a bed, floor heating and enough room for an adult to stand up.Unveiled in China on September 8, the Xiaomi SkyNomad family comprises four models: the N70 Pro, N70 Max, N90 Max and N90 Max Studio. Prices start at RMB 209,900, with the range built around Xiaomi’s new Kunlun platform and positioned as a family of intelligent, reconfigurable, large-space extended-range SUVs.The N90 Max Studio is easily the most unusual of the lot. Its electric roof lifts by 100mm and creates a two-level interior, with the raised section offering up to 2,294mm of total interior height. Xiaomi says adults up to 1.8m tall can stand upright at the lowest point of the rear section. The upper level measures 2,110mm by 985mm and gets a bed board that is 1,946mm long.The rooftop space isn't just an empty compartment either. It gets mesh screens on three sides, a forward-facing opening that provides a 1.7-square-metre window, air-conditioning vents, an 18W charging port and magnetic mounting points. A 30mm mattress is also included. But the cleverest part of the N90 Max Studio may be downstairs. The second-row seats can transform into a 1.87m-long, 1.24m-wide bed in around 30 seconds, without having to remove the seats or fit a separate mattress. The 40:60 split allows one side to be converted into a bed while the other remains available as a seat, creating what Xiaomi describes as a living room, bedroom and workspace in one vehicle.The Studio variant also gets wood-grain aluminium flooring, factory-integrated floor heating with three temperature settings up to 38°C, a 30-inch projection screen, blackout curtains, a fridge, 220V power outlets, a vanity mirror and storage cabinets. In other words, Xiaomi hasn't simply added a roof tent to an SUV — it has attempted to build a factory-made mobile living space.The more conventional SkyNomad N70 is all about flexible spaceThe N70, meanwhile, takes a more conventional approach but retains the same emphasis on making the interior configurable. Measuring 4,960mm long, 1,998mm wide and with a 2,950mm wheelbase, it gets a completely flat floor and sliding second-row seats.The second row can move by as much as 600mm, with maximum legroom reaching 1,410mm. Boot capacity stands at 1,203 litres with the seats in their standard position and expands to 2,425 litres with the second row folded.Xiaomi has designed several seating configurations around this flexibility. The front seats can rotate towards the rear for a face-to-face family tea or meal, while the second row can be pushed back to create what Xiaomi calls a first-class mode. There is also a family playground mode that opens up a larger central area inside the cabin.The N70 is offered in Pro and Max versions. The N70 Pro gets a 52kWh LFP battery, a claimed 351km CLTC electric range and a combined range of up to 1,351km. The all-wheel-drive N70 Max gets a larger 76kWh ternary lithium battery, 505km of claimed electric range and up to 1,461km of combined range. It can accelerate from 0-100kmph in 5.5 seconds.Then there is the seven-seat N90 MaxAt 5,285mm long with a 3,080mm wheelbase, the N90 Max is the flagship of the standard range. It uses a 2+2+3 seating layout and is aimed at buyers who want one vehicle that can double up as both a family SUV and a business-oriented luxury vehicle.The second row offers zero-gravity seating, while the front seats can also be configured for a zero-gravity experience or equipped with rotating seats and a table. Xiaomi says the seven-seater can accommodate seven passengers along with seven 20-inch suitcases.Power comes from a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup, with a claimed 0-100km/h time of 5.9 seconds and a top speed of 190kmph. Its 76kWh battery provides a claimed 464km of CLTC electric range and up to 1,705km of combined range.The N90 Max Studio uses the same basic powertrain but has a slightly different claimed range figure, with Xiaomi quoting 462km of CLTC electric range and 1,688km of combined range.Tech and safety are a major part of the packageThe SkyNomad family is also packed with technology. All four models get NVIDIA Thor-U computing hardware, LiDAR and 4D millimetre-wave radar, along with Xiaomi's Hyper Assisted Driving system.Inside, the N70 gets an 8.88-inch instrument display and a 16.1-inch central screen, while a 21.4-inch rear entertainment screen is available. The N90 Max adds a 20-inch HUD and a rear control screen, taking the number of connected displays to six.Xiaomi has also focused heavily on safety, with the N70 using a steel-aluminium body structure with up to 91.3 per cent high-strength materials and 2,200MPa ultra-high-strength steel at key locations. It gets nine airbags, while the N90 Max gets 12 airbags.With the SkyNomad family, Xiaomi appears to be asking a different question from the usual SUV brief.
