This Spider-Man Villain Team Is Closer To An MCU Debut Than The Sinister Six

Although Spider-Man is traditionally a solo act, he's often found himself fighting against entire teams of villains. Most notably among these is, of course, the Sinister Six, but several others have assembled to defeat him over the years as well. And yet, none have appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, in spite of the fact that Tom Holland's Peter Parker has already headlined four movies, more than any other live-action take on the Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man. His various battles in the MCU have enabled Peter to develop a sizable rogues' gallery. Admittedly, it'll never compare to the one his comic counterpart has, but there's no shortage of classic Spider-Man villains on hand in his world. He's engaged in clashes with Vulture, Shocker, Mysterio, and, most recently, the Scorpion. In just Spider-Man: No Way Home alone, he battled Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, Sandman, the Lizard, and Electro. As the MCU continues to throw threats at Spider-Man, it's worth wondering when it will give him an organized, official team of Marvel Comics villains. Such a choice would indeed be an excellent way of upping the stakes and putting Spider-Man in a bind that feels like he's in for the fight of his life. It's one of several pathways Marvel could potentially take if and when it brings back Tom Holland for a fifth Spider-Man movie. If that does happen, Marvel has some of the building blocks needed to build a villain team he's been at odds with since the 1980s. And though it's less famous than the Sinister Six, between the two, it has arguably has the stronger narrative justification for a big-screen role. The Sinister Syndicate In Marvel Comics Explained The two most important supervillain teams associated with Spider-Man in Marvel Comics are the Sinister Six and the Sinister Syndicate. They have similar names, but differ greatly in both the makeup of their respective rosters and their function. Most incarnations of the Sinister Six exist for the purpose of exacting revenge on Spider-Man for all the times he's foiled the plans of the group's individual members. As for the Sinister Syndicate, their goals are much less personal; they typically operate as mercenaries who run afoul of Spider-Man. The Sinister Syndicate is also composed largely of villains much less prominent than those found in the ranks of the Sinister Six. Whereas the Sinister Six counts Spider-Man's greatest adversaries as its mainstay members, the Sinister Syndicate is made up of mostly B-list Spider-Man villains, including Boomerang and Shocker, with Rhino being its highest-profile member. The leader of the first two versions of the team was Beetle, an Iron Man-esque villain and inventor. The Sinister Syndicate made their first appearance in The Amazing Spider-Man #280, where they faced a team-up of Spider-Man and Silver Sable. The original group - comprised of Boomerang, Beetle, Rhino, Speed Demon, and Hydro-Man - were tasked by Jack O'Lantern to dispose of Spider-Man and Silver Sable, who were on the villain's trail. The five characters - plus Shocker - later received their own comic book series, The Deadly Foes of Spider-Man, which chronicled their many escapades. The MCU Already Has Several Characters Who Could Form The Sinister Syndicate The MCU has steadily built a foundation for the Sinister Syndicate to take shape in a future Spider-Man movie. Spider-Man: Homecoming already introduced two different versions of the Shocker, and Spider-Man: Brand New Day notably confirmed the existence of Boomerang via a cameo in the movie's opening act. Much like Beetle and Speed Demon, Boomerang is one of the pillars of the Sinister Syndicate team and would be essential to any accurate adaptation of the crew's story. However, the MCU is missing the rest of the important pieces. Beetle currently has no MCU counterpart, nor do Rhino, Speed Demon, or Hydro-Man (apart from a monstrous illusion created by Mysterio in Spider-Man: Far from Home). But, it does feature multiple characters who fit the necessary criteria for a Sinister Syndicate member. Like Boomerang, Tarantula was introduced in Brand New Day as a villain defeated by Spider-Man between the events of No Way Home and the new movie. He too operates as a mercenary, and could easily be incorporated into the Sinister Syndicate. Based on how Scorpion has been characterized thus far, it's easy to see him get roped into the team's lineup as well. With that in mind, the MCU doesn't necessarily need each founding member of the team in the comics to create the Sinister Syndicate. Hydro-Man, Rhino, Speed Demon, and Beetle all deserve representation in the MCU, but any one of them could theoretically be replaced with the likes of Tarantula and Scorpion. What's more, it's worth noting that very little is needed to motivate their formation in the MCU's future; all that has to unite them is their shared desire for riches. A criminal mastermind or a wealthy, corrupt figure in New York City could lure them together for a high-stakes, illegal job that ultimately pits them against Spider-Man. Alternatively, they could be hired to assassinate Spider-Man by the next movie's main antagonist, which would be closely aligned with their debut appearance. The MCU May Be Closer To Introducing The Sinister Syndicate Than The Sinister Six Looking at what's already in place, the Sinister Syndicate seem to have a better chance of making an appearance in the MCU than even the Sinister Six, regardless of the fact that the latter is significantly more popular. The Lizard, Electro, Sandman, Green Goblin, and Doc Ock may all technically exist in the MCU, but all five of them were essentially just one-time visitors from the universes of Sony's other two Spider-Man franchises. None of them have proper Earth-616 counterparts. Furthermore, the major Sinister Six members Earth-616 does have aren't in a position to join. Spider-Man: Homecoming made a point of showing that Vulture bears no ill will toward Peter, and Mysterio is dead (unless the MCU somehow reveals otherwise). In order to have a proper version of the Sinister Six that stays true to the essence of the comic book team, the MCU needs several iconic Spider-Man villains harboring a deep-seated hatred of the superhero, and Marvel Studios looks to be a long way away from building such a roster.
