Mark Kiptoo has had some pretty memorable trips to Frankfurt. He won the city's marathon in 2014, returned four years later to set a then-world record for runners over 40, and on Sunday added another achievement to the list. This time, at 50 years old.The Kenyan distance runner finished the Frankfurt Marathon on October 25 in 2:15:24, averaging roughly 5:10 per mile across 26.2 miles. He placed 13th overall, but his performance was particularly impressive for another reason: It was the fastest marathon ever recorded by a man in the 50–54 age group—and it wasn't especially close. For 35 years, the M50 record belonged to South Africa's Titus Mamabolo, who ran 2:19:29 in Durban in July 1991. Kiptoo cut four minutes and five seconds off that mark on Sunday, a substantial improvement that now awaits official ratification by World Masters Athletics.Kiptoo has barely had time to get used to being 50. He celebrated his birthday on June 21, less than two months after finishing 2:12:21 at the Geneva Marathon. That performance came too early to qualify for an M50 record, but it offered a pretty good preview of what he could do once he entered the age group.Frankfurt wasn't even his first record-setting performance this month. On October 4, Kiptoo won the San Sebastián Half Marathon in Spain in 1:03:57, establishing a new M50 world-best time for the distance. Three weeks later, he was back on a starting line, this time with twice as many miles to cover.Kiptoo didn't start competing until he was 28, entering his first race in 2004 while serving in the Kenyan Air Force. He went on to win the African 5,000-meter title in 2012, but didn't make his marathon debut until age 37. That first 26.2 was in Frankfurt, where he finished second in 2013, just one second behind the winner. He also lost roughly a year of training to Achilles tendon trouble and the pandemic, according to the Frankfurt organizers. He returned to win the Zurich Marathon three years in a row from 2023 through 2025, clocking 2:09:16 in his last victory at age 48.Before Sunday's race, Kiptoo told organizers he hoped his running would inspire people not to give up or stop taking care of their bodies as they got older. Running a 2:15 marathon at 50 certainly gives him a pretty persuasive example to point to.Find Your Next Running PlaylistSean Abrams was the Senior Editor, Growth and Engagement at Men’s Health.
