Costume directors and casting directors have gotten increasingly skilled at picking out watches for movies and television. IWC created an entirely bespoke piece for Brad Pitt’s character in F1, while Succession solicited a watch expert to identify the pieces that would best reflect each character’s level of debasement. So, when a timepiece shows up prominently on screen today, it’s worth considering the message behind it. This made the release of the trailer for Digger, starring Tom Cruise conspicuously wearing a fancy gold watch, especially exciting today. In Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s Digger, Cruise plays a billionaire who is described as the most powerful man in the world. In the trailer, he wears garish suits, hand feeds his cat raw fish, and works out of his vast mansion. Which watch does Hollywood envision this ultra-wealthy and influential man to wear? A vintage Patek Philippe or maybe a particularly rare Rolex? The answer shows the prop folks did their homework: Cruise wears a Vacheron Constantin Overseas Dual Time in pink gold with a green dial. While Patek Philippe Grand Complications are impressive and lovely if a bit on-the-nose—and high-end independents are for true insiders—pieces from Vacheron Constantin convey a sense of refinement without flash. For someone seeking discretion—or, at least as much discretion as can be afforded by a gleaming hunk of gold—the Overseas Dual Time delivers luxury without hitting you over the head with it. True watch heads appreciate this, and one can safely presume that an eccentric billionaire with a walk-in closet the size of a one-bedroom in Manhattan would take note of such distinctions. The Overseas is a particularly nuanced choice for Digger. Because if you were a globetrotting modern oilman responsible for helping the US President to extricate the world from the brink of disaster, you’d probably want a watch that tracks multiple time zones, too. And though you could purchase one in steel or titanium, this sort of defeats the purpose of accumulating endless wealth, no? The ref. 7920V/210R-B965 neatly solves that problem: machined from 18K pink gold—including its spectacular integrated bracelet—it certainly commands the room, while the dark green dial provides a bit of whimsy to the proceedings and balances the overtly luxurious tone of the metal. Water resistant to 150m, this Overseas is no slouch in the face of adversity, either, and even comes with an additional rubber and grained calfskin straps. (Both in green, obviously.) It’s this potent mix of luxury and utility that ultimately makes the Overseas Dual Time such a compelling proposition. The Overseas was launched in 1996 as a sort of modern successor to both the brand’s famed 222 as well as the Phidias, a somewhat obscure line whose bracelet and case design clearly influenced the Overseas. Redesigned and relaunched in 2016, it now forms a key component of the contemporary Vacheron oeuvre and features numerous complications, sizes, and executions. One of Overseas’ key tenets is the emphasis on travel: besides its presence in the name of the collection, globe-trotting features heavily in the line’s flagship model, the Dual Time. Unlike many watches made for globetrotting, like a Rolex GMT-Master, this watch doesn’t feature a rotating bezel; rather, its 41mm case features a single pusher at 4 o’clock that controls the second hour hand. The dial has a standard 12-hour arrangement, plus a fourth hand with a large red arrow emanating from the center; a date wheel above 6 o’clock; and an AM/PM indicator at 9 o’clock. By using the pusher, the wearer can easily advance the date, while the crown is used to adjust both time zones. While it might not be the most ostentatious function for Cruise’s billionaire character, it’s certainly one of the most practical.
