The Delhi Police did its best to thwart the protests against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar on the October 10 weekend. Despite this, the national capital’s streets teemed with demonstrators loud enough to attract global attention.News outlets from the US, the UK, France, Germany, and more covered the protests with a focus on the Cockroach Janta Party, and its founder Abhijeet Dipke. Both have been in the spotlight since the June-July protests against former Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. With great fame comes greater scrutiny, and Dipke is no exception. As the protests against Gyanesh Kumar continued, many began criticising Dipke for allegedly sharing synthetic media and disinformation through his Facebook account.A SHADY ACCOUNTFor example, many people on X claimed that photos the account had shared of Delhi Police officers detaining him from an Air India flight were AI-generated. And these accounts were correct. The photos, which have since been deleted by the Facebook account, did feature many synthetic media artefacts. Another person on X alleged that “Dipke is spreading fake news on Facebook”. Per the post, he shared a video of a car filled with khaki uniforms and claimed that far-right agitators were pretending to be police officers and attacking protestors. India Today investigated this claim and found that this video was actually from West Bengal. And of course, the Abhijeet Dipke account on Facebook deleted the post as soon as the truth came out.So, it’s more or less clear that this Dipke account on Facebook has been doing some shady stuff. But here’s the thing: is this account actually operated by the CJP founder?IT’S NOTAt first glance, the account does feel legitimate. More than six lakh followers. A blue tick (which doesn’t mean anything any more but still lends an air of authenticity). Constant updates about the CJP and Dipke. And a link back to the official CJP Instagram page with more than 25 million followers. But a closer look immediately reveals it’s not an official channel. The page follows only five people, and not one is a CJP bigwig — though one of them is Rahul Gandhi. The page was created in May 2026, right around the time the Cockroach movement was gaining momentum. Dipke’s official Instagram account, on the other hand, was created in 2014.And most hilariously, the page, when it was created on May 26 this year, was called “Abhijeet Dipak”, and remained so till June 2. Obviously, not a mistake the real account would make. But just to be sure, we got in touch with the CJP. Ratna Singh, the legal affairs head of the movement, told India Today Fact Check that this was a fake account. Dipke himself took to X and wrote: “I don’t have a Facebook page, you idiots.”This, of course, is not the first time the CJP has been struggling with identity theft. Back in May, when the movement was in its nascent stage, many decided to ride its coattails and farm some engagement. We found a plethora of accounts pretending to be the Cockroach Janta Party, one of which had amassed nearly a million followers! So, there you have it: just because something is blue-ticked doesn’t mean it's official.- Ends
This blue-tick Facebook account spreading lies is NOT the real Abhijeet Dipke
