Getting plans out of the group chat can be a hard feat (Picture: Getty Images) Marbella 2023. The Inner Circle. We are Family. If you’ve got a phone, you’ve got a group chat, some more chaotic than others. In theory, these conversations are an ideal way to organise plans with your nearest and dearest — but often, no one commits, nothing is booked, and your diary soon fills up. Research from Sky Mobile reveals that nearly half of Brits currently have a social plan stuck in limbo, with staycations (27%), pub catch-ups (25%), and birthdays (20%) the activities most likely to be endlessly discussed, but never actually arranged And behind every stalled drinks, dinner, or weekend away, there is a very specific cast of characters. You’re probably already thinking about the mate who is full of enthusiasm but never actually commits (The Flake) or the lurker who reads every message, but doesn’t say a word (The Ghoster). Here are the eight characters in every group chat… it’s time to work out which one you are. Gen Z heavily rely on text to communicate and plan meet-ups (Picture: Getty Images) The Organiser The Organiser is pretty self explainatory. Need a Christmas gathering sorted? Want to book those tickets to a festival? The Organise will get it sorted. A thankless job, they’re the ones desperately trying to herd cats, turning vague ideas into an actual calendar reality with spreadsheets, polls, and firm dates. Ask Metro Use AI to go deeper into the stories you care about – powered by Metro and trusted publications. Without them, your summer trip this year would never have made it out of the group chat. The Organiser is the powerhouse of the operation, with 21% of Brits identifying as one. The ‘I’m Easy’ Friend Don’t be this person (Picture: Getty Images) Seemingly accommodating on the surface, this nonchalant character’s unwillingness to reveal their preferences (or total lack of an opinion) can actually become a major hindrance to locking down a plan. Trying to get a straight answer out of them about where to eat or what time to meet is an extreme sport. And it turns out that trait is a major red flag, with 36% believing that never committing to plans is the biggest group chat faux pas. The Ghoster The silent observer of the group. The Ghoster, which 14% of Brits identify as, reads every single message and never actually replies. Yet, despite barely bothering to send a measly ‘thumbs up’ reaction, when the time comes, they’re there. While you’re glad to have their company, it’d be nice to know they were going to show up. This is another ick, with 21% of Brits saying they feel let down by friends who forget to reply altogether. The Last-Minute Responder Always arriving fashionably late to the conversation, the Last-Minute Responder responds to arrangements only after the plan has already been formed, debated, and booked. They’re far too busy and unbothered to be getting into the nitty gritty of the logistics. And, with 57% saying group chats remain key to keeping friendships going, at least they’ve replied (we’re looking at you, Ghoster). The Meme Machine Communication with The Meme Machine rarely involves actual words. After all, why say ‘absolutely not’, when you can respond with an ‘Ew David’ GIF from Schitt’s Creek. The Meme Machine manages to navigate entire logistical discussions, emotional crises, and weekend planning sessions almost entirely in memes, GIFs, TikToks, and screenshots. Annoying? Yes. Funny? Also yes. The Flake Full of enthusiasm at the very beginning, The Flake is down for anything. They respond with suggestions, even debate the timings, and tell you they just can’t wait to get together. But deep down, you know it, and so do they: it’s all a ruse. The bus was on diversion, their parents are in town, the cat at their homework. True to form, they manage to drop out at the absolute last second, leaving the rest of the group short. The Yapper If you log on to find a barrage of voice notes, you’ve found The Yapper. This friend sends 10-minute long personal podcasts on topics completely unrelated to the meetup you’re trying to organise. You love to catch up with them, but sometimes, a simple ‘yes’ or ‘no’ would suffice. The Instigator They love sparking excitement by throwing out grand ideas like ‘we need a holiday!’ or ‘let’s do brunch this weekend!’. TikToks of impossibly delicious looking sandwiches, or the latest viral cookies, will get dropped into the chat, and suddenly, a plan is afoot. However, once the seed is planted, The Instigator immediately steps back and leaves everyone else to do the heavy lifting of organising it. This annoying habit is one that 22% of Brits say they feel disappointed by. You might think having the idea is the hard part, but not everyone agrees… Do you have a story you’d like to share?
