Fairphone has officially entered the American smartphone market with the release of the Fairphone Gen 6+, an upgrade to its latest eco-conscious Android device. The new model moves to a faster Snapdragon 7s Gen 4 chip (up from the Gen 3) and carries a larger 12GB of RAM (up from 8GB). More importantly, you can now buy it directly from Fairphone (soon from Amazon) and expect carrier support through AT&T and T-Mobile. Before, you typically had to go through third-party stores and check network compatibility yourself. Fairphone Gen 6+ The Fairphone Gen 6+ is a highly repairable Android phone with parts you can often replace yourself. The centerpiece, however, remains a design that's easy to fix yourself. There are 12 "easily replaceable" parts, including the 4,415mAh battery, 6.3-inch 120Hz display, and cameras (50MP main, 13MP ultrawide, 32MP selfie). You only need a single Torx T5 screwdriver, and you can attach add-ons like card holders and lanyards using two screws. Android 16 is included out of the box, and you can expect software updates until 2033. Fairphone offers a five-year U.S. warranty for those parts you can't fix. You're encouraged to keep your phone for several years, in other words. The brand also touts frequent use of recycled materials, "responsible mining practices" for minerals, a low CO2 manufacturing footprint, and better working conditions at manufacturers. There's no headphone jack, and the IP55 dust and water resistance isn't as strong as with some rivals. You do get a microSD card slot to add up to 2TB of storage. Fairphone Gen 6+ US price and release date One of the most affordable phones in the long term The Fairphone Gen6+ is available in the U.S. now for $649 with 256GB of built-in storage. There are certainly more affordable phones, including budget models like the $250 Moto G Play and mid-rangers like the $499 Google Pixel 10a. In some cases, they might be faster or offer more powerful cameras. However, Fairphone is betting that the long-term cost of ownership will be more appealing, particularly at a time when affordability is a major issue. You'll theoretically hold on to your phone for longer, and might decide to replace a broken part rather than the entire phone, even the display is relatively inexpensive at $90. The firm further sees legal momentum on its side. It points out that Right-to-Repair laws have been introduced or passed in all 50 states. While those laws don't require Fairphone's level of repairability, the brand clearly sees itself as ahead of the curve — others' phones might resemble the Gen 6+ in the years ahead, so you're really just getting a peek at the future.
