The Wolf Among Us Remastered Makes Fabletown’s Dark Fairy Tales Perfect For Halloween

Published Oct 31, 2026, 9:08 AM EDT Celebrate Halloween with a trip to Fabletown. If you ask me, fairy tales have a branding problem. Somewhere along the way, we decided they were supposed to be sweet, sparkly affairs populated by woodland creatures and ladies who really ought to stop talking to mirrors (nothing good ever comes from a woman asking her reflection questions after midnight). Fabletown, the secret New York City community at the heart of The Wolf Among Us Remastered, has a rather different interpretation. Here, folklore characters have traded enchanted forests for city streets, and happily ever after looks considerably less likely. Out now, The Wolf Among Us Remastered arrives just in time for Halloween. The game is bringing Telltale’s dark detective noir mystery back with updated visuals and a new opportunity to meet some of fiction’s most fascinatingly terrible people. This is not a traditional horror game built around jump scares and things lunging at you from dark corners. Its appeal is more unsettling: classic fairy-tale figures who have seen better centuries. I say, if Halloween is the season for revisiting monsters, why not revisit Fabletown? Wishlist Today Meet The Big Bad Wolf At the center of Fabletown is Bigby Wolf, the sheriff responsible for keeping its supernatural residents in line. If that sounds like a straightforward job, consider the clientele. These are characters whose stories have been told, retold, sanitized, and turned into bedtime reading for generations upon generations. In Fabletown, their reputations precede them, and their histories are rather harder to escape than a catchy Disney song. Personally, I still have the entire soundtracks of all the animated princesses memorized, so I'm hardly one to judge. Bigby is particularly interesting to me because his identity itself comes with basically a warning label. The Big Bad Wolf is one of folklore’s most recognizable villains. It’s a creature associated with deception and a very unfortunate habit of making himself the center of other people’s stories. Here, he has a position of authority. He investigates crimes in a community that has every good reason to distrust him. His werewolf design is a highlight of the remaster. There is renewed attention to the creature beneath the familiar silhouette. He is not a fairy-tale villain wearing a badge, nor is his reputation something he can conveniently leave at the office. His identity is inseparable from the world he is trying to police. For a Halloween protagonist, you could certainly do worse than a wolf with a complicated relationship with his own legend. Bloody Mary, Bluebeard, And Grendel Bigby is one of Fabletown’s many memorable residents. You’ll also meet characters like Bloody Mary, Bluebeard, and Grendel. Each adds their own spooky baggage to a game where fairy tales are a whole lot darker than the bedtime stories you or I remember. Take Bloody Mary. Even the name carries the sort of supernatural menace that makes a bathroom feel like a terrible place to spend Halloween night. Bluebeard, meanwhile, comes with a French fairy-tale legacy around secrecy and forbidden knowledge. Grendel draws on the monstrous figure from Beowulf, the Old English epic poem. He’s the kind of creature who makes you grateful your own family drama probably won’t end up immortalized in medieval literature. These are not characters who need any sort of elaborate introductions. They come with centuries of cultural shorthand. What makes Fabletown especially interesting is the chance to encounter these figures outside the versions we think we know. Their familiar identities are part of a larger mystery, and their designs help establish a world where the fantastical feels uncomfortably close to ordinary life. The remaster’s updated presentation will give returning players a new look at these personalities, while newcomers get an invitation to discover them. If you had to investigate a murder in Fabletown, which fairytale character would you trust the least? The Perfect Halloween Noir Mystery The real draw of The Wolf Among Us Remastered is both recognizing a collection of folklore favorites and investigating the city they inhabit. The mystery gives these familiar figures somewhere to go beyond their original stories, while the game’s choices invite you to engage with the people and conflicts at its center. Noir Mode will give you another way to experience that. With deeper shadows, desaturated color, and sharpened contrast, it makes Fabletown feel like it wandered straight out of a vintage detective flick. It is an appealing option for anyone drawn to a Halloweeny shadowy aesthetic, especially when paired with the remaster’s updated character detail. Fabletown is opening its doors again just as the season turns toward the spooky and things that go bump in the night. Preferably things that stay on the other side of that door, thank you very much. You do not need to be a horror devotee to appreciate its appeal. You just need a taste for mysteries and making difficult choices. This Halloween, trade the trick-or-treat route for a trip to Fabletown. The Wolf Among Us Remastered is out now on PlayStation 5, Xbox One (playable on Xbox Series X|S through backward compatibility), and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store for $24.99. New players get 20% off through November 12 (on PlayStation 5, for PlayStation Plus members), and digital owners of the original save up to 50%.
