Netflix's The Witcher is one of the streamer's most popular TV shows to date, and it's ending an era in 2027. Netflix has brought a variety of original fantasy TV shows, some so good that they are now among the best TV shows of all time, such as Stranger Things and Arcane. One of Netflix’s best fantasy shows, despite its flaws and controversies, is The Witcher, which is preparing for its fifth season. At the end of The Witcher season 4, Geralt (Liam Hemsworth) made his “of Rivia” title official while still looking for Ciri (Freya Allan), Yennefer (Anya Chalotra) formed the Lodge of Sorceresses, and Ciri was taken captive by Leo Bonhart (Sharlto Copley) after he brutally killed the Rats. Season 5, then, is expected to cover some truly dark stories, especially related to Ciri, her escape, and the plans that her father has for her, and as such, it has some big challenges to overcome. As mentioned above, The Witcher has faced controversy and backlash due to unnecessary changes to the source material, especially in season 2, with the subsequent seasons doing their best to fix them and course-correct. Still, The Witcher season 5 is one of the most anticipated Netflix projects, so much so that it was expected to release in 2026 but was delayed, and so the show will see the end of an era in 2027. The Witcher Will End Its TV Run In 2027 Image via MovieStillsDB The Witcher debuted on Netflix in 2019 and became an instant hit. The Witcher was one of the Netflix original TV shows with the most potential to succeed thanks to the fanbase of the books and video games, but the above-mentioned changes made to the characters and stories, particularly Yennefer, completely changed the audience’s perception of the show. Still, Netflix’s The Witcher has maintained its popularity long enough to make it to its fifth season. Season 5 of The Witcher will be the show’s last, and because the show still has two more novels to cover and many loose ends to address and questions to answer, it’s one of Netflix’s most anticipated releases but also one of the riskiest. Even though season 4 was released in 2025, season 5 was expected to be released in 2026, more so as Netflix initially included the show in its 2026 calendar, but it was eventually removed. Although The Witcher season 5 doesn’t have an official release date yet, it’s now expected to arrive sometime in 2027. This fits the schedule of the previous seasons, as they all had a two-year gap between them, and with production of season 5 ending in October 2025, it’s highly likely to be released in 2027. Because of this, The Witcher will reach the end of an era in 2027, as while the Netflix show wasn’t the novels’ first TV adaptation, it was the first English-language one and reached a much bigger worldwide audience. What's Next For The Witcher Franchise After The Netflix Show? CD Projekt Red 2027 will be the end of Netflix’s The Witcher, but the franchise will carry on after it. The world of The Witcher comes from Andrzej Sapkowski’s novel series of the same name, but what further boosted its popularity and expanded its fanbase was its adaptation to video games. At the time of writing, the video game The Witcher IV is awaiting an official release date, though it’s planned for a 2028 release. What’s known about The Witcher IV is that it will focus on Ciri as the playable character rather than Geralt. The Witcher franchise, then, will continue through video games, and while at the time of writing there are no more books planned, it wouldn’t be surprising if another one was released (more so as the most recent one, Crossroads of Ravens, was published in 2024). As for the franchise’s Netflix branch, it could continue through spinoffs, but with the exception of the animated movie Nightmare of the Wolf, these haven’t succeeded. Even if there were more spinoffs over at Netflix, 2027 will still be the end of an era for The Witcher as it will see the end of the main show.
