Although the TV series is pumping out new entries and spinoffs all the time, the games take longer to make. The official launch of the base game of The Witcher 3 was back in 2015, and although we still have DLC coming out for it somehow, that's a long time between mainline entries. That all changed in 2022, when developer CD Projekt Red let fans know that The Witcher 4 was in the works, and it would star Ciri this time around; a massive shift from the Geralt-led series. Thanks to an official update directly from CD Projekt Red on X, we know when The Witcher 4 is coming. In a video shared on social media this week, CD Projekt Red Joint-CEO Michał Nowakowski shared an update on the fourth mainline Witcher: "We have more than 500 incredibly talented developers working to create something truly special for you...this is our biggest, boldest, and most ambitious game to date...the Witcher 4 is targeting a 2028 release window." Yep, in just over two minutes, Nowakowski provides some rapid-fire updates for the series, but notably gives us a window for The Witcher 3. This is the latest window we have, as the team has internal metrics in mind and is aiming to get the game out by 2028. Given how much polish a huge open world title like this needs, I can see it slipping out of there and into 2029. If that happens, there's a reason so many people will be OK with it. If a delay happens (or even if "2028" means December 2028 and basically 2029), many fans and casual observers alike will understand, given how Cyberpunk 2077 turned out at launch. CD Projekt Red never wants to go through a troubled launch like that again, and it took a ton of time to get everything up to par. Now, it shines as a paragon in the modern open world genre, and even runs well on Switch 2. Time truly can heal some wounds. There's some bad news though. The Witcher 4 will not be featured as heavily this week at Gamescom, in favor of showcasing The Witcher 3 surprise DLC. The team also "is not ready to share an exact date." So right now, 2028 is a "target," and while the co-CEO knows it is "a bit of a wait," but asks to "let the team cook."
