However, its sheer size and scale has proven to be nearly impossible to adapt into other mediums, most notably after the recent cancellation of Amazon's The Wheel of Time television series after just three seasons. Even with the show's massive budget, faithfully and effectively adapting Jordan's universe to the screen is no easy feat, and condensing the story down into episodic bits for television just didn't fully land for audiences. War of the Dragon: The Wheel of Time is an upcoming tabletop strategy game that has recently smashed through its Kickstarter crowdfunding goal by a staggering 2,334%. The campaign ran for just 27 days, from May 27 to June 23, 2026, and clearly has drawn massive interest from the larger WoT community. This is almost certainly due to creator Dire Wolf's stated intentions of providing the definitive Wheel of Time experience that remains faithful to Jordan's source material, particularly the sprawling conflict that consumes the latter portion of the series. War of the Dragon picks up after the fall of the Stone of Tear, roughly around the beginning of The Shadow Rising, before carrying the struggle between the Light and Shadow all the way through Tarmon Gai'don, the epic finale in Jordan's iconic series. On the gameplay side, War of the Dragon is built primarily around area control, with the Light attempting to unite and hold the nations of the Westlands while the Shadow spreads corruption and installs the Forsaken across the map. Players deploy armies and characters, complete missions, recruit allies, wield the One Power, and battle for strategically important regions, with their decisions ultimately shaping the road to the Last Battle. Dire Wolf initially sought just $50,000 for the project on Kickstarter, but 6,156 backers ultimately pledged a whopping $1,166,993 during the 27-day campaign, far exceeding its goal. The campaign also offered multiple editions and upgrades, including miniatures and premium components, while the standard Dragon Reborn Edition is planned for retail release in 2027. While The Wheel of Time Amazon series may be done for, the world Robert Jordan created is clearly far from finished. iWoT Studios is currently developing an animated project intended to explore more of the franchise beyond the live-action series, but War of the Dragon may ultimately offer fans a more immersive experience. The ability to reshape events and determine a different path toward the Last Battle feels particularly well-suited to a universe built around fate, choice, and the Wheel repeatedly turning.
