Along with the hardware, the VE027-H features built-in WiFi with no hub required, a touchscreen keypad, a key fob, and a physical key for backup.I keep pricier locks like the Schlage Sense Pro, Encode Plus, and Arrive on my own doors, and I’ve spent months testing budget models to see how they compare. While I like the idea of a key fob for my kid, the fingerprint reader is the method I used most often. As I’ve written before, I prefer the raised physical buttons to touchscreens, mainly because my toddler has an easier time with them than with a glass panel.The lock stores more than 20 fingerprints and 100 PIN codes, with permanent, recurring, scheduled, and one-time options. Auto-lock is adjustable, and there’s a one-touch lock if you’d rather lock the door yourself on the way out.Premium Features for LessLike a lot of modern smart locks, the VE027-H has built-in WiFi, so you don’t need a separate hub or bridge to connect it to your network. Through the KK Home app, you can lock and unlock the door from anywhere, check its status, see who entered and when, and create or delete codes remotely. If a neighbor needs to drop a package inside while you’re away, for example, you can set up a one-time code for them.Brandon RussellYou can set one-time PIN codes for guests in the Veise app.Veise says access logs, PINs, and fingerprint data are stored locally on the lock with AES-128 encryption rather than in the cloud, meaning that data is scrambled into unreadable code. So if someone ever got their hands on it, they’d be left with useless gibberish. It also rates the lock IP65 for weather resistance. It’s monsoon season here in Arizona, and the lock has come through torrential downpours and haboobs without a problem.It runs on eight AA batteries, and if those die, you can use the Type-C port for emergency power or the physical key. Voice control through Alexa and Google Assistant is supported, though that’s not something I really used.You Give Up a Few ThingsThe VE027-H carries a BHMA/ANSI Grade 3 rating, an industry durability and security score that runs from Grade 1 (toughest) down to Grade 3, which is what a lot of consumer smart locks are rated for. However, it does sit below the Grade 1 hardware on a lock like the Schlage Encode, which is tested to survive more than twice the open-close cycles and five times the hammer strikes in a forced-entry test. For a typical front door, though, Grade 3 is fine.If you want the most rugged lock available, or you’re putting it in a really high-traffic area, Grade 1 is a safer option. Either way, one of the most important security upgrades you can make is using three-inch strike-plate screws that reach the door frame, since most break-ins tear the strike out of the jamb. Like a lot of locks I’ve tested, this one has no door-position sensor, so the app can’t tell you whether the door is actually shut.You don’t get Apple Home Key or Matter support, which rules out tapping to unlock with an iPhone. It also means you’re stuck managing the lock in Veise’s KK Home app instead of controlling it alongside your other Matter devices in one place. The VE027-H only comes in two finishes, matte black and satin nickel, and because Veise is a smaller name than Schlage, it’s unclear how the lock will hold up long term.Final ThoughtsIf you’re adding a smart lock to your front door and want fingerprint entry, remote control, and a matching handle in a single purchase, the VE027-H gives you a lot of hardware for $200. The fingerprint reader is quick, the built-in WiFi means you don’t have to buy a hub, and getting a handleset means you have a complete setup right out of the box.It handles the basics well, too, and it mostly faded into the background during my testing, which is about all I want out of a smart lock.
