The Upcoming Godzilla Film Officially Marks a Huge Series First

This atomic lizard has stayed active into his advanced age, with nine movies over the last decade; some of these were even quite good! The next film in the series, Godzilla Minus Zero, is a direct sequel to Godzilla Minus One, which is one of the best entries in the franchise's history. This follow-up will challenge the series in at least one major way: Godzilla Minus Zero will be the first R-rated Godzilla film. The Motion Picture Association just released the rating, citing that the movie contains “some violent content/bloody images.” Considering this series is full of violent content — being about giant monsters destroying things, and all — it’s probably fair to assume that the “bloody images” bit is what's driving the R-rating. Frankly, it’s a bit surprising that the series has never received this rating before. Shin Godzilla is all about uncomfortable atomic horrors, with a suffering, mutated Godzilla driving the plot. Godzilla Minus One overlaps heavily with World War 2, one of the most violent conflicts in human history, and its direct aftermath. What is Godzilla Minus Zero about? Minus Zero is set in 1949, two years after the previous film, and will follow several of its surviving characters. As you can expect, Godzilla somehow returns after seemingly being destroyed. While the last movie largely focused on “humans versus Godzilla,” this sequel seems to reintroduce another iconic monster from the series. Takashi Yamazaki returns for Minus Zero to direct and write. Much of the key crew is coming back: Kōzō Shibasaki returns as cinematographer, Ryūji Miyajima will edit, and Naoki Satō will compose the score. The original rights holder, Toho, is producing the movie, and it will be the company’s 34th entry in the series (American production companies handled the other five). We won’t have to wait long to see what critics think: Godzilla Minus Zero will premiere at the New York Film Festival on Sept. 26, 2026. It will then be released in Japan on Nov. 3, 2026, and in America through GKIDS on Nov. 6, 2026.
