The UK pub where you can get ‘sail-thru’ fish and chips straight to your boat

McMonagles Fish and Chips, a restaurant on the Forth & Clyde Canal in Clydebank, is serving dinner right on the water: to paddleboards, kayaks, canoes, whatever. After sailing to the window, punters can be tucking into sustainably caught fish and hand-cut chips without stepping out of their vessel. And here’s a Metro exclusive: the restaurant has revealed they will be introducing a wall menu to make ordering easier, as well as a QR code to access the menu. They’re also planning to have handy baskets to pass down meals. Ask Metro Use AI to go deeper into the stories you care about – powered by Metro and trusted publications. Though it spent its first few years bobbing in the water of the 35-mile-long canal, McMonagle’s is now stuck in place with cement. Opened in 1993, the family-run restaurant has really leaned into TikTok-famous dishes like Frickles, battered pickles, battered baked potato with macaroni, and battered baked potato with steak pie. And they cater to everyone. McMonagles, which describes itself as ‘the world’s most unique fish & chip restaurant’, also serves gluten-free fish and chips and gluten-free vinegar. Also on the menu are pizzas, vegan pizzas, loaded fries, burgers, and kids meals such as fish fingers and hamburgers, plus halal options too. The restaurant, which was nominated for the Scottish Fish & Chip Awards 2026 in July, is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10am-9pm, while ‘sail-thru’, delivery, and takeaway services are available from 11am-9pm. For now, though, this is it. If you’re looking to make a day of it in Clydebank, there’s plenty to get up to. The Clydebank Museum and Art Gallery has showcased the town’s local history since 1980, situated in Clydebank Town Hall. Clydebank also offers excellent hiking views over the River Clyde and Loch Lomond on the Kilpatrick Hills. Only a half-hour drive away is the city of Glasgow, which has many attractions such as Glasgow Cathedral, botanic gardens, and Glasgow Science Centre, complete with an IMAX theatre. Glasgow is also home to over 260 pubs, making it an ideal place for a night on the town. More travel inspiration from Metro Do you have a story you’d like to share?
