On the latest Tales from the Celebrity Trenches, host Jamie East is joined by Alison Boshoff to discuss her book Brand Beckham, which lifts the lid on the A-list family's most turbulent years Boshoff interviewed more than 20 Beckham insiders for the book, building on years covering the family for the Daily Mail It charts the story of Sir David and Victoria as they built their global empire up to the estrangement of their eldest son Brooklyn since his marriage to American actress Nicola Peltz'There were two things I didn't really understand until I wrote the book,' she said.'I wrote about Victoria when she was in the Spice Girls, but it was only when I was speaking to somebody. They talked to me about how they had this classic girl band relationship.'It was like, who's got the best solo, who has the nicest outfits, and there was all this endless jealousy.'The person said to me, Victoria became well schooled in the art of being a b****. Then, when I started looking at her relationship with Nicola Peltz, it started to kind of clang in my head. I thought, ok, now I understand this.'There was all this passive aggressive nonsense about not liking things on Instagram, withholding favour. But subtly, in a way you could deny it… that I really do understand now.'David and Victoria Beckham have not commented on the claims in the book.Boshoff said her research also changed her view of who holds the power in the marriage, and that David has far more of it than most assume. In the aftermath of Brooklyn's sensational Instagram statement in January, much of the coverage focused on Victoria, whose conduct around the wedding dominated his account.'Everyone thinks David's wonderful,' Boshoff said.'They think, poor David, carted around from pillar to post by Victoria. She wears the trousers.'Actually, that was not the picture at all that emerged after writing the book. Researching the book, it's entirely the other way round. That was really fascinating to me.'Brand Beckham: The Fame. The Feuds. The Fallout by Alison Boshoff is published by Century, £22, and is out now.Hear Boshoff break down the infamous Beckham-Peltz wedding by searching for Tales from the Celebrity Trenches, wherever you get your podcasts.
