‘The story is very simple’ – Jose Mourinho opens up on ex-Chelsea doctor Eva Carneiro scandal in Netflix documentary

JOSE MOURINHO did not shy away from the Eva Carneiro scandal in his Netflix documentary – but insisted the controversy was not the reason he was sacked. Referee Michael Oliver waved on Chelsea medics Carneiro and Jon Fearn to treat the stricken Belgian star. But that meant he would have to go off the field temporarily, reducing the home side to just eight outfield players – and Mourinho lost his rag, launching into an expletive-laden tirade at the pair of docs, which features uncensored in the self-titled documentary. Mourinho, 63, said: “The story was very, very simple. “I’m not a doctor but my eyes know when a player is injured and when a player is not injured. “I knew Eden was not injured but the doctors went on to the pitch and we were left with nine players. So, as always, I used my vocabulary when I’m not happy. “There are words in moments where the tension is very, very high. “Normally, people with football culture, with football DNA or with a football background get over it in one second. In that case, it was different.” There were accusations Mourinho called Carneiro a “daughter of a b****/w****” in his native Portuguese but he denied any sexist connotations behind his furious comments. Carneiro – who had worked at Chelsea since 2009 and under Andre Villas-Boas and Rafa Benitez in the first-team set-up – was banished from attending training or matches and left her position six weeks later. The Gibraltarian, now 52, took Chelsea and Mourinho to court in a high-profile case and settled confidentially on the second day of an employment tribunal the following June. Part of the agreement from her constructive dismissal lawsuit was a public apology from the football club. But Mourinho was axed by the Blues in December 2015 – two months after the initial legal case was filed by Carneiro. Former captain John Terry explained: “Medically, Jose would say unless it’s really, really bad, then they’re not coming on. “That was the understanding of us as players, the medical staff, everyone bought into that. “It was a big moment obviously and he took a lot of backlash for that.” Asked if the Carneiro situation was the reason he was sacked, JT answered: “There was a lot of heat on the football club.” But Mourinho was unequivocal in his assessment of why he was dismissed. He believes it was purely because of matters on the pitch – with the final straw a 2-1 defeat to eventual champions Leicester. That was holders Chelsea’s ninth defeat from 16 Premier League matches. Mourinho concluded: “The media around Chelsea every day, every press conference, what’s going to happen, the lawyer from the club, the lawyer from the doctor, who is going to be a witness… all of this situation didn’t help. “But come on, I was sacked because we were losing.
