The Star Wars prequel trilogy is getting a new chapter 21 years after Revenge of the Sith, and it's coming to Disney+ in just four months. The prequel trilogy of Star Wars movies has rather famously had a renaissance in the past decade. Though they were initially criticized heavily, the prequels have become beloved for several reasons; the kids who grew up watching them are now adults who view them with nostalgia, backlash to the sequel trilogy made viewers appreciate the prequels more, and George Lucas' sprawling political epic has proven endlessly timely even after two decades. Perhaps the biggest reason for the prequel renaissance, however, is the sheer amount of content made about the trilogy and its place in the Star Wars timeline. Between Star Wars shows like Obi-Wan Kenobi, The Clone Wars, The Bad Batch, and Maul - Shadow Lord, as well as countless books, comics, and video games like Jedi Survivor and Zero Company, the prequels have been a dominant force in the franchise for years now. Because of those many shows, games, and more, the Star Wars prequel trilogy has, in effect, been continuing almost nonstop since 2005. Now, the next chapter in the ever-growing saga of the prequels, Ahsoka season 2, is just four months away from premiering on Disney+. There are a few reasons Ahsoka season 2 is the most direct continuation of the prequel trilogy that we've gotten in years, and there are also a few reasons it may be the last chapter of the prequel renaissance that we have for a while. Ahsoka Season 2 Will Continue The Star Wars Prequel Renaissance Ahsoka has, from the start, been intrinsically tied to the Star Wars prequels. Ahsoka Tano herself first debuted in The Clone Wars, which started the prequel renaissance in the first place. She's Anakin Skywalker's former padawan, she fought in many of the Clone Wars' most important battles, and even though the show takes place after Return of the Jedi, it's still very much so connected to the prequels. More specifically, Ahsoka season 2 is also leaning even further into its connection to the prequel trilogy. The trailer for Ahsoka season 2 already teased more flashbacks to young Ahsoka and Anakin's time in the Clone Wars, which fairly clearly indicates that the show is going to deal with Ahsoka's past pretty heavily. Anakin's Force ghost also already appeared to Ahsoka in season 1, played by Hayden Christensen, which is as direct a connection to the prequels as it gets. Ahsoka season 2 is clearly connected to the prequels, but it also has a chance to continue the renaissance. Just about everything about the prequels has been redeemed in the two decades since it ended, from Anakin's characterization to the overall story. The only thing left that's still a bit hokey is George Lucas' decision to replace Sebastian Shaw with Hayden Christensen in Return of the Jedi. Ahsoka's inclusion of Anakin's Force ghost, however, can finally start giving an explanation for the change, making the prequels retroactively better once again. Star Wars Is Trying For A Sequel Renaissance In 2027 & Beyond Credit: Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures via MovieStillsDB While Ahsoka season 2 is part of the prequel renaissance, it may be the last part of it for the foreseeable future. Disney and Lucasfilm are now turning their attention to the sequel trilogy instead and trying to spark something of a sequel renaissance. Many of the upcoming Star Wars movies on the horizon, including Starfighter, New Jedi Order, and Simon Kinberg's yet-unnamed trilogy which is widely speculated to be Episodes X, XI, and XII, are directly connected to the sequels. All of this new Star Wars content connected to the sequels seems like an effort to give the trilogy the same expanded context and new meaning that spurred the prequel renaissance. After all, it was The Clone Wars' in-depth exploration of things like Anakin's personality and the inner workings of the Jedi Order that started the rehabilitation of the prequels' image in the first place. Now, Disney and Lucasfilm seem to be trying to do the same thing to the sequels: give them more context and make some of the heavily criticized elements (like "somehow Palpatine returned") make more sense. It's far too early to tell, but given Grand Admiral Thrawn's war against the New Republic, the show has a chance to connect itself to the sequels. Ahsoka season 2 could include some new lore about the formation of the First Order and how it was distinguished from the Imperial Remnants, it could give more information about the New Republic's demilitarization, or something else that helps give the sequels more context. The "Mandoverse" has already started that, through The Mandalorian's Project Necromancer, so it's not unreasonable to think that Ahsoka could also have some tie to the sequel trilogy. Only time will tell whether Disney and Lucasfilm's attempt to start a sequel renaissance will bear fruit. It has been seven years since The Rise of Skywalker, so many of the kids who grew up with the sequels are entering their teenage years and early adulthood. Plus, if anyone can do it, it's Dave Filoni, who already rehabilitated the prequels. Now may be the perfect time to start a sequel renaissance, and Ahsoka season 2 may be the show to start it.
