The Saucony Endorphin Speed 6 is coming out October 15, and our team has already logged a few runs in the shoe. Here’s a preview of Saucony’s key updates, our initial impressions, and why you should also take advantage of the Endorphin Speed 5 sale. That shoe is now 26 percent off.New Features and Our ImpressionsThe Endorphin Speed 6 is the companion shoe to the brand’s carbon-plated Endorphin Pro 5 and the Endorphin Elite 3. While we like using the Endorphin Speed for workouts because he nylon plate makes the shoe more pliable, some runners prefer the shoe as a less aggressive, cheaper racing option. There’s so much to look forward to with the Speed 6:The beaded, PEBA-based Pwrun PBX midsole is even lighter and cushier than the previous foam, Pwrrun PB, used in the Speed 5.Saucony added 2mm to the stack height to increase the angle of the SpeedRoll for more propulsion. The newly designed nylon plate has ribbing and slots to make the shoe more compliant for natural gait transitions.Best for Marathon-Paced WorkoutsProsShoe has a livelier, bouncier ride compared to past iterationsUpdated nylon plate provides more rigidity for stability during propulsive effortsConsRuns slightly narrow for wide feetWeight8.3 oz (M), 7.2 oz (W)Drop8 mmStack Height36 mmWhen I tested the Endorphin Speed 6, one memorable run was a 12-miler on a muggy morning. I was still exhausted from lack of sleep, but I showed up to the run, with the disclaimer to my two running mates that I might bow out at any moment. Thanks to the shoe’s smooth rocker ride and propulsive plate and foam, I ran the entire 12.I need to log a couple more runs to troubleshoot a minor offense: six blistered toes. Since I was the only tester who had this experience, I may have to chalk it up to my choice of socks that morning (I blindly grabbed a pair from my sock drawer in the dark). As for the rest of our team, Senior Editor Cat Bowen noted how the shoe feels “a lot more aggressive” than the previous version.SauconyThe Saucony Endorphin Speed 6 has a higher stack height and new midsole foam.“I like how bouncy it feels when I pick up the pace and the cushioning isn’t so plush that I feel like I’m getting diminishing energy return,” she said.Bowen didn’t get any blisters, but experienced some overheating. “It is light and pretty speedy, and so far no hotspots from either the gusseted tongue or the shoe itself. I feel as though the shoe runs a little bit warm, even warmer than the 5.”Runner-in-Chief Jeff Dengate also commented on the upper—favorably. “I appreciated the upper tweaks,” he said. “The forefoot feels a little roomier. I often have an issue where my pinkie toes go numb on long runs because of the Saucony toebox shape. But that hasn’t happened with this version.”He felt the ride “hedges a little closer to the Pro. I found the shoe rides fairly harsh and snappy. It’s a shoe I’m only reaching for on workout days.”Why You Should Snag the Endorphin Speed 5 NOWWe still have a month’s worth of testing by a half dozen other runners before the Endorphin Speed 6’s official launch, which is all the more reason to raise our glasses to its progenitor: the Saucony Endorphin Speed 5—before it’s gone for good. The shoe has the brand’s Pwrrun PB foam and winged nylon plate, which provides torsional rigidity for a stable ride. The shoe may be less aggressive than the newest Endorphin Speed, but it still packs plenty of power—and support—to help you through difficult workouts or propel you to the finish line.Another reason to stock up on the Endorphin Speed 5 is its thin, airy engineered mesh upper. Unlike our experience running in the Speed 6, our feet didn’t run hot.For a shoe beloved as a more affordable, more flexible racer, the $130 price tag is an absolute steal. As we continue our experiential research, accruing mileage in the Endorphin Speed 6, put a pair of Endorphin Speed 5s in your cart—colors and sizes are already being depleted.Shop Men’s Saucony Endorphin Speed 5Shop Women’s Saucony Endorphin Speed 5Amanda Furrer, Editor, Running Reviews, studied journalism at NYU and writing at Emerson College.
