'The Rookie's Greatest Episode Broke Its Most Frustrating 7-Season Trend

Fans of the epic romance between Tim Bradford (Eric Winter) and Lucy Chen (Melissa O'Neil) on ABC's The Rookie have ridden quite a rollercoaster over eight seasons. The couple finally got together and started dating in Season 5, only to break up early in Season 6. Then, fans of the pairing, affectionately nicknamed "Chenford," endured two seasons of frustrating antics, hoping the two would get back together. Things finally came to a head in one of the show's best episodes, which gave fans what they wanted most. The 'Will They/Won't They' Phase of Chenford Went On for Too Long For some additional background, Tim broke up with Lucy in Season 6, Episode 6, "Secrets and Lies," after the incident involving Ray Watkins (David Dastmalchian). Fearing he'd hurt Lucy’s career, Tim split up with her. Throughout the rest of Season 6 and most of Season 7, the agonizing "will they/won't they" get back together phase continued. It was like Ross and Rachel from Friends all over again. However, Season 7 at least put forth a potential reconciliation for the couple. During Season 7, Tim attends group therapy and works on becoming more "emotionally available," wanting to fix his broken relationship with Lucy. Tim and Lucy revealed they still love each other and even started a sneaky-links relationship; though, it appeared obvious to their close friends that they still belonged together. It all culminated in the Season 7 finale, "The Good, the Bad, and the Oscar," when Tim romantically confessed to Lucy, asking if they could resume their relationship and start living together as well. Unfortunately, Lucy slept through the entire proposal, exhausted from working her first night shift. It was a bitter pill to swallow, and while the moment was played for comedy, it felt like a cruel bait-and-switch by the creators, as if they were toying with viewers' emotions. Lucy sleeping through Tim’s confession felt like a microcosm of the previous seasons, giving fans hope of a romantic reunion, only for reality to come crashing down. Thankfully, everything changed with the Season 8 premiere. The Chenford romance reached a major turning point in the Season 8 premiere, "Czech Mate." With their friends playing matchmaker, Tim and Lucy finally got a chance to have the "adult conversation" they’d been putting off. It was nice to see Tim and Lucy talk things out honestly, like grown adults. They were finally ready to resume their relationship and move in together. At long last, the prayers of the Chenford fandom were finally answered, and all the frustrating memories from earlier episodes were put to bed. As frustrating as that ending note was for the Season 7 finale, the writers rightfully recognized they couldn't bait-and-switch Chenford shippers again, and the issue was quickly resolved in Season 8. Last season essentially depicted the "living together" phase of their relationship, reinforcing the fact that Tim and Lucy work better as a couple than when they're apart. Unfortunately, another wrench got thrown into the works as Season 8 came to a close, just as it looked like the stars were aligning for Tim and Lucy's whirlwind romance. Tim and Lucy's Proposal Was Interrupted in 'The Rookie' Season 8 Finale Image via ABC Unfortunately, with everything going so well for Tim and Lucy throughout Season 8, it was only a matter of time before the other shoe dropped, which happened in the Season 8 finale, "Bandit." In the episode's final moments, Tim finally proposes to Lucy, and Lucy accepted! The couple was engaged, and all was right in the world for an idyllic beach proposal. Then the lovely moment gets interrupted by two assailants working for the war criminal Heath Everett (Jeffrey Vincent Parise). They ambushed and knocked out Tim and Lucy, kidnapping them. This feels like an encapsulation of the entire Chenford saga. Just as we think things are about to finally settle down, chaos ensues. What's worse about Season 8’s cliffhanger ending is the long break between seasons of The Rookie. Fans must wait for the rest of the year to find out Tim and Lucy's fates. Now, in the upcoming ninth season, the newly engaged Tim and Lucy are in the hands of individuals who want them dead and must fight for their lives. Hopefully, Season 9 will bring a swift resolution to Tim and Lucy’s abductions, and they can finally get things back on track. If The Rookie puts together yet another season of keeping Tim and Lucy apart, fans will suffer a giant headache all over again.
