The Right is at a time for fusing

In the weeks leading up to midterm elections that could define American politics for a decade, a heated debate has broken out between various factions of the American Right. Pre-Trump Republicans, who resent the GOP’s shift away from Bushism and Romneyism, have declared war on Make America Great Again conservatives who celebrate the party’s Trumpian turn.In addition to debating policy, they are hurling insults, accusing populists and nationalists of everything from stupidity to disloyalty to bigotry. This fight is a preview — or more accurately, the opening salvo — of the 2028 Republican presidential primary. For all its vehemence and substance, the most striking thing about this debate is that it is taking place inside a tiger’s mouth. The Democratic Party is planning to storm next week’s midterm elections like the Bastille, fueled by a Jacobin fanaticism unprecedented in American politics. This is not your father’s New Deal coalition.Throughout 2026, leftists associated with the Democratic Socialists of America repeatedly upset traditional liberals up and down Democrat primary ballots. Sixty-five percent of Democrats now have a favorable view of socialism. The party’s rising stars tout DSA ideas such as defunding the police, eliminating Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and emptying prisons. Even Democrats not aligned with the DSA are campaigning on promises to tear down huge swaths of our constitutional order as soon as they have the chance. They want to nuke the Senate filibuster, pack the Supreme Court, and even add new blue states to the union to tilt the Senate and the Electoral College permanently in their favor.Once secure in their power, the New Left will open our borders, outlaw voter ID and carbon emissions, pass a wealth tax, and socialize healthcare. They will surrender U.S. sovereignty to international organizations and treaties American citizens never consented to.As U.S. Sen. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) recently said, they will sic the Justice Department on Republican staffers to criminalize dissent and scare young conservatives around the country away from careers in public service. They’re going to make the Stalinist cancel culture of “Woke 1” look like Morning in America (1984). They will codify abortion on demand. They will strip traditionalist churches of their tax-exempt status and harass conservative business owners into bankruptcy. They will ban school choice and mandate that public schools “affirm” students’ gender transition without their parents’ knowledge. They will spy on, censor, and de-bank conservative citizens, donors, and organizations. And if all of that isn’t enough, much of the Left’s new totalitarian energy is coming from its newest coalition partner: jihad-sympathizing Islamist activists. Americans are getting a sneak preview of the “Red-Green” Left’s ambitions in this month’s riots across France. This is the backdrop for libertarian and establishment Republican pundits calling MAGA NatCons names and preemptively blaming them for Democrat victories this fall. As if helping elect anti-American, antisemitic, constitutional vandals serves populist, nationalist conservatives right. Their offense was daring to question a Republican platform that produced one presidential popular vote victory between 1992 and 2012.“If you wanted our help stopping Democrats from secretly mutilating your children or setting up sharia law in Minneapolis, you shouldn’t have defended lumber tariffs!” is not an argument that future generations of conservatives hiding in catacombs will find terribly compelling.Yes, Donald Trump’s two presidential terms have reshuffled the GOP’s policy priorities. And yes, the Right absolutely needs to hash out its differences and come to a new consensus — a new fusionism of MAGA and pre-MAGA conservatism — before the next presidential election in 2028. But there is no benefit — to the coalition or the country — to intramural sniping between now and Nov. 3.Contrary to D.C. conventional wisdom, the 2026 midterm elections remain winnable. Polls show Senate races are close, but in the Trump era, they have repeatedly underestimated Republican support. Some polls have even used “fabricated numbers” to bolster Democrat candidates and depress conservative turnout.Early voting data already suggest the supposed 2026 blue wave may be nothing more than media hype aimed at creating a self-fulfilling prophecy. Conservatives should ignore the psyop, quit the internal bickering, and focus on the big wins Trump and congressional Republicans put up over the last two years on immigration, taxes, regulations, diversity, equity, and inclusion, education, energy, and crime. Equally important, we must recognize the big losses the country will face if the Left regains control of the government. It’s because the Trump GOP has been so successful that the Red-Green Left has gone feral. Of course, America still has problems. But House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries’s (D-NY) impeachment reality show and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer’s (D-NY) judicial-appointments blockade will make them all worse!W. JAMES ANTLE III: BLUE WAVE OR BIG POLLING ERROR? HERE’S WHY IT’S HARD TO TELLThere will be plenty of time after the midterm elections for establishment and anti-establishment conservatives to argue, fight, and reunite for 2028 and beyond. The Heritage Foundation will do its part the week after the elections, when we host The Forum alongside conservatives from across the philosophical spectrum. But every ounce of energy — let alone snark — wasted on those disagreements now will only tip the electoral scales further in the Red-Green Left’s direction. If any conservatives hope to win in the future, all conservatives should lock in and focus on the task at hand today. For the country’s sake and our own, the Right should suspend intramural debate season until Nov. 4, and lock arms and win together on Nov. 3.Kevin Roberts is president of the Heritage Foundation and Heritage Action for America.
