'The Rainmaker’s Milo Callaghan, John Slattery Reveal How the Iconic Novel Came to LifeCourt is back in session for The Rainmaker season two—are you sure you’re ready for this? After all, if you thought the stakes were high in season one, then they’ve gone sky-high in season two, with Rudy (Milo Callaghan), Bruiser (Lana Parilla) and Deck (P.J. Byrne) taking on their youngest and most vulnerable client yet. One who seemingly doesn’t have very deep pockets. If it feels like a shift from the rainmaking in season one, Byrne agrees. And he blames Deck’s newly heightened moral highground on what he learned from his colleagues in season one. “You know what's interesting,” The Wolf of Wall Street alum told E! News in an exclusive interview, “after [Bruiser] taught me to be an amazing lawyer, [Rudy] taught me to have a huge moral code—that's where I find myself this year. Instead of looking out for the low hanging fruit cases this year, I think Deck looks for people who are being bullied.” He added, “So, if the powerful are trumping on the people that are weak, he has a problem with that. He likes to punch a bully, and he's got the two best weapons in the land to stand next to.”It’s a lesson Deck learned firsthand in Rudy’s fight against Leo Drummond (John Slattery) and healthcare giant Great Benefit, earning justice for Dot Black (Karen Bryson) following the death of her son Donny Ray. But while the win was all Rudy thought he was working towards, Callaghan sees his character—to use his own metaphor—as a little lost at sea when season two kicks off. Especially since, in his legal victory, he lost girlfriend Sarah (Madison Iseman) seemingly for good.USA Network“If series one is him climbing the mountain,” he explained, “the beginning of series two is him understanding that the pinnacle is not really what fulfills him—it was the people that he meets and befriends along the way, and the relationships that he builds.” Instead, “We really meet Rudy when he's at sea, and it's he's grasping for land,” Callaghan noted. “He thinks that maybe the promotion or the girl or the money is gonna fulfill and kind of heal the hole in his heart.” And he isn’t the only one whose heart—past or present—is back in the hot seat this season. Bruiser’s ex-husband (played by series newcomer Austin Nichols) comes to her in need of legal assistance for issues that might not be entirely above board. For Parilla, the storyline will help peel back some of the layers Bruiser built up during season one. USA Network“We'll see definitely a more vulnerable side,” the Once Upon a Time alum teased. “This season she's really managing emotions and sort of toggling between her professional life with these two and the firm and her obligations to the cases that arise.” Plus, Bruiser is “also dealing with an ex-husband, which for anyone would be very difficult.” But where having a season one that Callaghan called “so ambitious” might be a daunting prospect, coming back for season two felt only like a comfort. And the reason makes for an open-and-shut case: each other. “It really felt like we'd all played a whole season together,” the Rivals actor explained, “and figured out playing professionally. And then we came in and there was a synergy that was very productive in the context of a much more ambitious season even than the first. It was like a behemoth.” In fact, for those who turn up for their day in court in season two, Callaghan promises this next installment will bring everything fans loved from season one and more. “We're going to meet new people that we're really excited for everybody to meet,” he said. “We're going to explore old relationships, people that the audience know. And I think I think what is exciting is that we have taken the model of the first season, which was one case and we've expanded it to several different streams of the law.” As he put it, “I don't think that when you watch the show, there's going to be a moment that doesn't feel like it's in pretty exciting motion.” So, make sure to tune into the premiere of The Rainmaker season two Oct. 16 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on USA Network.
