Only real heads will recognize the microbrand on Jon Bernthal's wrist.Any cool watches in Spider-Man: Brand New Day? Not especially from our main man Peter Parker, given strapping one to the outside of his Spider-Man suit might affect his aerodynamic abilities a bit. We’ve had to make do with Tom Holland wearing his trusty Rolex Daytona off-screen at premieres. But look closer at Frank Castle, the vigilante known as The Punisher, played with proper tough-guy energy by Jon Bernthal. The Punisher was first introduced in Daredevil and then had his own spin-off series. In Brand New Day, he’s an able ally to Parker thanks to his special-forces background as a Force Reconnaissance Marine.Castle's background explains why he’s wearing a watch with proper military pedigree, the Sangin Instruments Neptune. Sangin is a micro-brand set up in 2016 by Jacob Servantes, a former US Marine Raider who served in special operations in the Middle East, and helpfully identified what Bernthal is wearing in a post in the brand’s Facebook owners’ group. The company is named after the dangerous district of Afghanistan in which Servantes operated, and in a 2024 interview with the Watches of Espionage blog, he touched on the (very secret) special models he was working on for current soldiers and intelligence officers. Not that the models available to regular civilians are exactly lightweight: the Neptune has been developed with feedback from military members and it shows. The crown is positioned at eight o’clock, unusually, “to reduce wrist interference during dynamic movement." This is a watch built for guys who need to kick down a door or leap for cover from machine-gun fire. The dial markings are also ultra-luminous for those clandestine jaunts undertaken under cover of darkness. The watch is sturdily built. With a thickness of 11mm-thick and a width of 40mm, you won't need to squint to read it on your wrist. You could wear this during everyday activities, even if you have no former or ongoing affiliation with any special forces organisation. Priced at $1,599 with a Swiss-built movement inside, it’s accessible too. However, after the appearing in the new Spider-Man, you’ll now need to join a waiting list to try and cop one. Still, probably a bit easier than scoring Holland’s platinum Daytona. This story originally appeared on British GQ.
