The Pokémon MMO We Always Wanted Has Arrived

It has always felt like there should be some form of official Pokémon MMO, especially considering that, over the years, Game Freak has implemented elements that either function like MMO features or feel completely ripped from one. Of course, more recently, Pokémon has experimented with co-op beyond merely battling one another, but the studio has never gone quite far enough as to create a whole shared world for players to explore together. Fortunately, that's finally changing, as a brand-new Pokémon MMO allows players to come together, form guilds, battle one another, complete quests, and attempt to finish their Pokédexes together. It is a massive new project, one that will surely become a must-play for fans of the franchise, and hopefully even push Game Freak into finally releasing the leaked Pokémon MMO teased a few years ago. In the meantime, this new MMO may just be the closest thing we get to truly playing Pokémon together. A Pokémon MMO Has Landed There have been, of course, several Pokémon MMOs in the past. These projects often rank among the best fan-made Pokémon games and serve as a great way for fans to finally interact with one another outside of instanced battles and four-player co-op in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. We've also gotten Pokémon-adjacent MMOs, like TemTem, which have proven definitively that not only does the concept work in practice, but there is a clear demand for it among fans. However, the most recent Pokémon MMO has something that a lot of the aforementioned fan-made projects have always struggled with: an easily accessible client. Rather than needing to download a specific client and deal with various emulators and ROMs, Green Trainers Online is played entirely in your browser. This makes it infinitely more accessible, something that will prove hugely beneficial in the long run when it comes to sustaining a large enough player count to make all of its ambitious systems work. Green Trainers Online Is Available Now Played via its official website (and soon a dedicated mobile app), Green Trainers Online takes the foundations of Pokémon Emerald, and adds key MMO features to make it a sprawling shared world for fans to play within. Currently, the game is in its Beta phase, with major new features being rolled out at a fairly consistent pace, ensuring that players have a little more to do than merely battle one another. There are currently guilds for players to join and quests to complete, all of which have fostered a rather lighthearted energy within its existing community. All one needs to play Green Trainers Online is a legally obtained ROM of Pokémon Emerald, which they'll then have to upload to the game's official servers to access it. Beyond that, the game is completely free and instantly accessible via your browser. It literally couldn't be easier. Of course, it's debatable whether The Pokémon Company will let this one slide, although, for the time being, it appears it doesn't have any issue with it, much like it hasn't for other massive fan-made Pokémon projects and expansions. At the very least, its mere existence is a testament to just how much players want an official Pokémon MMO. Considering just how successful the MMO model can be (take a quick glance at FFXIV for a perfect example), it is somewhat surprising that The Pokémon Company hasn't gone down that road. Perhaps one day, especially now Game Freak has access to the more powerful Switch 2, a Pokémon MMO will become a reality. Until then, amazing, high-quality fan-made Pokémon games like Green Trainers Online will have to suffice.
