The world has no shortage of exciting, wholesome, coming of age, witch dramas, in part, thanks to the popularity of Studio Ghibli's legendary film, Kiki's Delivery Service, and the more recent efforts of shows like The Owl House. Of course, this isn't something to complain about, but rather celebrate, as the cozy, colorful settings of films like Kiki's Delivery Service and the pertinent themes of self-discovery and acceptance in shows like The Owl House are valuable and make for exceptional entertainment. However, when it comes to the world of video games, these experiences, while certainly present, are not quite as prevalent. There are games like The Owl House that adopt certain, more magically-inclined, elements of its overall identity, but few that truly capture the essence and coming of age drama of it and the aforementioned Ghibli classic. Fortunately, an upcoming witch-themed gem that you can play for free does very much combine the two to create something that may end up being just as resonant with fans. This Game Is Like A Warm Hug As one looks forward to the upcoming The Owl House projects and assorted Ghibli-like games, they should turn their attention to developer Sunny Lab's latest title, The Witch's Bakery. Taking rather heavy inspiration from Kiki's Delivery Service (which, to be clear, is a good thing), The Witch's Bakery puts players in the role of Lunne as she attempts to run her very own bakery, much like Kiki's semi-adoptive mother figure, Osono, and heal the hearts of her friends and customers. Ostensibly, The Witch's Bakery takes the setting, cozy witchy element, and coming of age themes of Kiki's Delivery Service and the emotion and character-driven exploration of The Owl House (with a little sprinkling of Persona's Palace mechanic), to create something that has the potential to be truly unique. By day, players work in the bakery, meeting customers' needs and creating fresh bread and pastries. In the evening, they'll visit friends, explore Paris, and delve into the troubled hearts of their closest companions. By night, they'll, well, sleep, as well as hone their magical prowess for the days to come. With several unique districts of Paris to explore, each with their own characters, shops, and tone, there is plenty to get up to when you're not kneading dough or dealing with customers. If the warm color palette and Ghibli-inspired visuals weren't enough to convince you that this is a playful, cozy title with a lot of heart, then Lunne's cheerful, quirky attitude and her adorable cat companion should hopefully do the trick. Witch's Bakery Is For Fans Of Cozy Games Of course, this all means that The Witch's Bakery is absolutely a game for cozy gamers. Much like Magical Delicacy and Mika and the Witch's Mountain before it, The Witch's Bakery aims to essentially transform the very essence of Kiki's Delivery Service into a playable and immersive experience. That doesn't mean, however, that those drawn to the more action-packed and adventurous side of The Owl House won't be able to find enjoyment in it. As aforementioned, not all of The Witch's Bakery is about selling bread and hanging out in Paris. There's also the emotional side of the game, which sees Lunne quite literally go inside the hearts of her friends and explore dungeon-esque locations warped by their difficult emotional state or trauma. This is where much of The Witch's Bakery's narrative elements come from, and what will ultimately help shape it into a memorable experience for all. For those interested in playing it, a free demo of The Witch's Bakery is available right now. It includes the game's first chapter, which should be enough to showcase its best features and help prospective buyers decide if they want to pick it up. The full game is set to launch on October 14, 2026, so those interested should be sure to wishlist it over on Steam or their platform of choice, as they won't want to miss out on what could very well be the next best witchy adventure since Kiki's Delivery Service.
