The Original Highlander Returns With Next Major Release In 3 Months

The original Highlander returns with a major release in three months. One of the most iconic fantasy films of the 1980s, the first Highlander movie launched a franchise that would grow beyond cinemas and into television and other media as well. Now, British-based publisher Titan Comics has announced a stunning new version of the film. Drawing on the mythology of the Scottish Isles, 1986’s Highlander has become a part of the pop culture fabric. The franchise’s tagline: “there can be only one” has become a mantra in geek culture. Starring Christopher Lambert, Sean Connery, Clancy Brown and others, Highlander was the story of a clan of immortals, seemingly locked in combat for all eternity. In the Highlander universe, the only way an immortal can be killed is by chopping off their head and taking their power. While not an instant hit upon release, Highlander became a cult classic. Highlander spawned an array of sequels and has branched out into other media. Most notable was a television series that ran for six seasons in the 1990s. There was also an animated series airing during that decade as well, along with other licensed media, including books. Each entry in the Highlander franchise adds something unique to the mythos, and Titan is giving fans an amazing opportunity to see where it all began in Highlander: The Original Screenplay. Titan Comics Is Giving Fans Widen's Originial Vision for Highlander Today, Titan Comics released its January solicitations, including one for issue two of Highlander: The Original Screenplay. Written by Gregory Widen, who wrote the first film’s screenplay, and drawn by Szymon Kudranski, the four-issue miniseries is an adaptation of Highlander, done by its creator. Titan provided a solicitation for the book, which reads as follows: Knight Moves! A mysterious stranger known as Ramírez arrives and begins training Connor as the young Highlander discovers more about himself. His training is put to use in the present day as Connor's skills are tested during a second explosive encounter with the Knight! Highlander creator Gregory Widen's adaptation of his original screenplay continues in a centuries-spanning epic second installment! Titan Comics also released first looks at the covers to Highlander: The Original Screenplay #2, including contributions from Kudranski, as well as Lee Binding and Robert Hack. What truly makes the release of Highlander: The Original Screenplay special is that it reflects Widen’s original vision for the film. Reportedly, Widen’s first draft was substantially rewritten and the characters' backstories altered. The tone of Widen’s first version was much darker than what fans got in theaters, and Highlander: The Original Screenplay will allow fans to see the movie the way Widen intended, in all of its blood-soaked glory. Highlander's History In Comics Is Sparse Titan Comics Can Expand The Highlander Mythos Highlander’s history in comics is surprisingly short. Dynamite Entertainment ran a handful of minis in the late-2000s, while IDW Publishing picked up the license briefly a decade later. A failed revival attempt, Highlander 3030, only saw one issue before imploding due to creative differences. The Highlander series is in good hands with Titan. Now that Titan Comics, who also publishes Doctor Who titles, has the license, there is a grand opportunity to expand the Highlander franchise even further. The Highlander movies and television shows were neutered in what they could depict in terms of violence and gore, but in comics, there are no such hang-ups, allowing Widen to realize his vision for the first time. Yet before Highlander can grow and develop, it is important to understand where it came from, and The Original Screenplay shows this to fans in a visually stunning fashion. The Highlander movies and television shows were neutered in what they could depict in terms of violence and gore, but in comics, there are no such hang-ups, allowing Widen to realize his vision for the first time. Highlander fans will be all the richer for it. The Highlander Franchise Is Endearing, Which Is Only Fitting It has been 40 years since the first Highlander film graced theaters, inaugurating an unlikely franchise. After all these years, fans may think there is little left to see about Highlander, but its creator, Kurdanski and Titan Comics, are about to prove them wrong. Furthermore, a Highlander reboot is on the horizon, starring Henry Cavill and others. While fans wait for the film, which currently has no release date nor has started shooting, then Highlander: The Original Screenplay is a great way to get ready for the franchise’s return. Highlander: The Original Screenplay #2 is on sale January 6 from Titan Comics!
