The Opener: Guardians Walk-Offs, White Sox Sluggers, Campusano

For the first time since 2002, the A’s hit four home runs in one inning (h/t Martin Gallegos of MLB.com). Max Muncy, Alika Williams, Jeff McNeil, and Zack Gelof all went deep in the third inning on Friday. It wasn’t a Sacramento situation, either. The game was in Seattle, against ace Logan Gilbert, no less. 1. Guardians walk off Tigers twice Detroit jumped out to a 6-1 lead after three innings in the first game of yesterday’s doubleheader in Cleveland. Guardians shortstop Brayan Rocchio knotted the game in the fourth inning with a grand slam. He played the hero again in the ninth inning, delivering a walk-off homer against Drew Sommers. The Tigers held a lead deep into Game 2 until Travis Bazzana came through with a game-tying homer in the eighth inning. Bazzana then knocked in Rocchio in the 10th inning to complete the sweep. Cleveland is one game up on Toronto for the final AL Wild Card spot. 2. Two 30-homer White Sox The AL Central-leading White Sox had a trio of young infielders racing to 30 home runs. Third baseman Miguel Vargas crossed the finish line first, taking Zebby Matthews deep in the first inning on Friday for his 30th homer. Shortstop Colson Montgomery matched the feat in the fourth inning. Vargas and Montgomery reached 30 homers just ahead of first baseman Munetaka Murakami, who is stuck on 29. Chicago leads the AL in scoring. The club ranks third in the AL in home runs, behind the Yankees and Astros. 3. Campusano’s big night Padres catcher Luis Campusano did it all for San Diego on Friday. After Spencer Jones knocked in the ghost runner against closer Mason Miller in the top of the 10th inning, Campusano threw him out stealing. It was the backstop’s third caught stealing of the game. He came to the plate against Paul Blackburn in the bottom of the frame and smashed a walk-off homer. It’s the second time since the league began tracking caught stealings that a catcher has had three in one game, plus a walk-off home run (h/t AJ Cassavell of MLB.com).
