Netflix has unveiled the trailer for its three-part Matthew Perry documentary. Away from the Friends set, though, he was dealing with an addiction that would follow him through much of his adult life. Netflix’s new documentary The One About Matthew Perry brings that more private side of the actor to the fore, with his sister Mia Perry Bowick revealing just how hard he fought to get sober.In the trailer for the three-part series, Bowick reflects on the contradictions that defined her brother’s life. “All great stories have comedy and tragedy in them. And that certainly was Matthew's story,” she says. She also recalls Perry speaking about a sense of emptiness and loneliness that he struggled to fill.“He spent 7 million dollars trying to get sober. That's how seriously he took his disease,” she adds.The documentary, which premieres on Netflix on October 27, will look at the man behind one of television’s most recognisable characters. Perry’s journey to Friends, his audition for the sitcom and the making of Chandler Bing will be explored through interviews with people who worked with him. Former NBC president Warren Littlefield and Season 1 writer Jeff Strauss are among those sharing memories of Perry and the early days of the sitcom, Variety reported. Other collaborators from his television and film career will also feature.But the series isn’t only interested in the actor audiences knew from the screen. Perry’s friends David Pressman and Roger Castillo, as well as several of his former girlfriends, will offer more personal accounts of his life away from the spotlight. Rather than separating that chapter from his success, the documentary appears to place the two alongside each other – the sitcom fame, the money and the public image on one side, and the battle to stay sober on the other.Perry died on October 28, 2023, aged 54. Nearly three years later, the Netflix series revisits his life through the people who knew him, worked with him and watched his struggles up close.The One About Matthew Perry is directed by Emmy-winning filmmaker Mary Robertson and produced by Maxine Productions, a Sony Pictures Television company. Robertson also serves as executive producer alongside Lisa Kalikow, Eli Holzman and Aaron Saidman.
