‘The Odyssey’ Sails Back to Theaters Ahead of Awards Season

Any movie fan who has yet to catch The Odyssey on the big screen will soon be getting another chance. Christopher Nolan’s epic, which has a home release date set for November 17, is returning to theaters in December. This is not just an excuse for all those theaters that made upgrades specifically for The Odyssey to wring a little bit more out of their investment. And it’s not just so that Universal can add to the movie’s massive box-office haul (over a billion dollars worldwide) or further pad its lead as the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time, which is just one of its record-setting feats. Nope, this is to help ensure The Odyssey‘s award chances, with the hope that Hollywood voters will have adequate opportunities to be properly dazzled. Nolan’s 2023 hit Oppenheimer memorably scored seven Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director, all without cracking a billion, so hopes are presumably high for another season stuffed with gold statuettes. According to the Hollywood Reporter, The Odyssey will “return to more than 1,000 North American theaters in all formats, including Imax and Imax 70mm,” starting December 11. The Odyssey‘s Oscar odds are likely to be strong in nearly every category, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, Best Production Design, all of the acting categories (let’s go Samantha Morton!), and more. Bringing the movie back to its natural habitat on the biggest screens possible feels like a wise move for its campaign strategy. Want more io9 news?
