The Odyssey leaked: Nolan film's pirated version goes viral, Universal takes action

Universal Studios has taken action after a high-quality pirated copy of Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey surfaced online. The studio confirmed that it had initiated takedown procedures to remove unauthorised copies of the IMAX-shot epic, which was illegally shared on X.Over the weekend, a high-quality version of The Odyssey appeared on a now-suspended X account, with the full 2-hour-53-minute film shared through a link. The pirated copy quickly gained traction, racking up nearly 2.1 million views before the platform and studio began removing the content.Addressing the leak, Universal Studios issued a statement to Deadline, saying, “We became aware of the unauthorised posting of the film and immediately initiated takedown protocols. We take copyright infringement seriously and will pursue all appropriate remedies to protect our content and intellectual property rights.”Following the studio’s action, most copies of the leaked film appeared to have been removed from social media platforms by Sunday morning. The Odyssey has now joined a growing list of films that have been leaked online in recent years. Several major releases, including Ryan Gosling's Barbie, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and Avatar 3, have also faced similar piracy issues after unauthorised copies surfaced on the platform.Amid the film’s leak, some users turned the situation into an opportunity for online pranks, using the viral moment to Rickroll unsuspecting viewers. The popular internet prank involves misleading viewers by making them believe they are about to watch one video before unexpectedly switching to Rick Astley's iconic 1987 song Never Gonna Give You Up. In this case, some fake clips began with scenes resembling the official production company logos from The Odyssey before abruptly cutting to Astley's famous track.Directed by Nolan and shot entirely using IMAX cameras, The Odyssey is currently running in theatres worldwide and has been performing strongly at the global box office, nearing the USD 700 million mark.
