The Odyssey Box Office Surges Back To #2, Beating More Than A Dozen Newer Movies

Christopher Nolan's star-studded adaptation of Homer's epic poem features Matt Damon as Odysseus opposite Anne Hathaway as Penelope, Tom Holland as Telemachus, Lupita Nyong'o in a dual role as Helen of Troy and Clytemnestra, and many more. 2026's The Odyssey, which quickly surged past $1 billion worldwide, debuted at No. 1 at the domestic box office, holding that position for two consecutive weekends before being knocked to No. 2 by Spider-Man: Brand New Day. It maintained that position until its sixth weekend, when it was knocked to No. 3 by Insidious: Out of the Further (which debuted at No. 2). Spider-Man: Brand New Day has broken the 2026 record for the most consecutive weekends at No. 1. Per Deadline, as of Saturday morning, The Odyssey is projected to earn a 3-day domestic gross of $14.6 million by the end of its seventh weekend in theaters. This sees it dropping an astoundingly narrow 26% from its sixth weekend, which is enough for it to climb back up the domestic chart to reclaim the No. 2 position. While it remains behind the smash hit Spider-Man: Brand New Day (which is one of the Top 10 highest-grossing movies of all time), it has managed to conquer more than a dozen newer 2026 releases. Just this weekend, the Christopher Nolan movie has been able to outgross the sophomore weekend of Insidious: Out of the Further (which sees it falling to No. 4 with a drop of more than 60%) and the debut weekends of the new releases Coyote vs. Acme (No. 3) and The Dog Stars (No. 5). Overall, it has managed to usurp more than a dozen newer releases during the time it has been in the Top 3. Its next frame in the United States is the Labor Day holiday weekend, which will be besieged with new releases including the survival thriller sequel Fall 2: Deadpoint, Mark Wahlberg and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II's historical crime drama By Any Means, and the Adam Wingard action-horror movie Onslaught. While none of those titles are guaranteed hits, it is entirely possible that one or more of them could debut higher than the eighth weekend of The Odyssey. Even if they don't, the anticipated legacy sequel Practical Magic 2 should be able to beat the Nolan movie during the following weekend, pushing it to at least No. 3, if not further. The movie has been able to defend its position so well thanks to a variety of factors. This includes glowing The Odyssey reviews, which have earned it near-perfect Rotten Tomatoes scores of 94% from critics and 97% from audiences. Additionally, its reputation as the first movie to be shot in its entirety on IMAX film cameras has encouraged ticketbuyers to see it in IMAX and other premium large formats, which have more expensive tickets that allow it to continue collecting such solid grosses even after more than a month in theaters.
