The Mandalorian and Grogu infamously underperformed at the box office, losing an estimated $65 million after accounting for its production budget and marketing costs. What was supposed to be Star Wars' triumphant return to the box office for the first time since 2019's The Rise of Skywalker ended up being one of the franchise's lowest-grossing movies ever. The slate of upcoming Star Wars movies also doesn't bode well for Din and Grogu. After Ryan Gosling's Starfighter premieres in 2027, Disney and Lucasfilm are turning their attention back to the Jedi through movies like New Jedi Order, Dawn of the Jedi, and Simon Kinberg's trilogy. On the television side, The Mandalorian is also in a precarious position. There's still no word about The Mandalorian season 4, and its chances of being renewed dwindle every day. Despite all the problems The Mandalorian is currently facing, and despite the fact that The Mandalorian and Grogu does not have an official Disney+ premiere date yet, Din Djarin and Grogu are returning to the streaming platform next month. Star Wars announced that the new special LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian will premiere on Disney+ on September 2, marking the first time Din and Grogu have returned since their film. The special's teaser poster reimagines the iconic moment where Din Djarin first met Grogu in LEGO form, and the special's description promises to "celebrate your favorite stories and characters from all three seasons of The Mandalorian series." Based on the poster and description, it seems that LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian won't be a new story, but rather a retelling of the events of The Mandalorian in LEGO form. Given LEGO's history with Star Wars, that retelling will likely be even more family-friendly and more humorous than the original series. Star Wars also revealed that it will be offering a screening of the special at the D23 Expo later this month, on August 15. LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian does also offer a glimmer of hope for the Mandalorian franchise. As previously mentioned, Din and Grogu's future is uncertain following The Mandalorian and Grogu's lackluster performance. The mere fact that Disney and Lucasfilm agreed to a collaboration with LEGO to retell the story of The Mandalorian may be a sign that the companies haven't given up on the characters yet, and that there may be more stories featuring them in the future. The Mandalorian Isn't The Only Major Franchise With A LEGO Special Despite LEGO's long history of collaborating with Star Wars, The Mandalorian isn't the only show that will be getting an animated retelling in brick-style this year. Netflix's live-action One Piece is also getting a two-part LEGO special (via Tudum) that is set to premiere on September 29. According to the announcement, LEGO ONE PIECE will be a retelling of the live-action show's first two seasons, narrated by Usopp (Jacob Romero). LEGO's take on One Piece is also being positioned as more of an introduction to the show and its complicated lore for new viewers, which may not be the case for the Mandalorian LEGO special. It's also not clear if LEGO will continue looking for more collaborations in the future, and its One Piece and The Mandalorian specials are just the start of a new kind of LEGO show.
