The Love Hypothesis trailer review: Reinhart, Bateman spark intense chemistry

Adapting a much-loved romance novel comes with one very specific problem: readers already have the scenes, characters and chemistry playing out in their heads. So when The Love Hypothesis arrives on screen, the biggest question isn’t whether the story works — it’s whether Olive and Adam look and feel like the Olive and Adam fans imagined.Judging by the trailer, we’re off to a pretty good start.Actors Lili Reinhart and Tom Bateman seem to have slipped comfortably into the roles of Olive Smith and Adam Carlsen. There is awkwardness, banter, irritation and, most importantly, that unmistakable pull between two people who are supposedly pretending not to be interested in each other. In other words, the fake relationship may be fake, but the chemistry certainly doesn’t look that way.For fans of Ali Hazelwood’s novel, the trailer is also reassuringly familiar. Rather than taking too many liberties, it appears to recreate several moments one will immediately recognise, including Olive’s impulsive fountain kiss and the much-anticipated sunscreen scene and the hotel room scene (come on). The academic setting, the fake-dating arrangement and the push-and-pull between Olive and Adam all retain the flavour of the book, making the adaptation feel less like a reinvention and more like the story stepping off the page.And then there is Bateman’s Adam. He has the intimidating professor routine down, but there is enough dry humour underneath it to make his dynamic with Olive work. Reinhart, meanwhile, gives Olive an endearing mix of confidence and nervous energy. Put them together and the contrast is half the fun. She talks, he stares. She panics, he remains completely deadpan. Romance, apparently, can thrive on very different communication styles. The trailer also understands what made Hazelwood’s book work beyond the obvious romance. Olive isn’t simply waiting around to fall in love; her academic ambitions remain an important part of her story. Her friendship with Ahn is also woven into the narrative, giving the film something more to play with than just the familiar fake-dating formula.But if the trailer has already got fans talking, it’s largely because Reinhart and Bateman seem to have found the spark. There is an ease to their exchanges that makes the central romance believable even when the characters are insisting that none of it is real.The Love Hypothesis isn’t trying to hide what fans already know is coming. It is leaning into the book’s most beloved moments, its romantic-comedy rhythms and the Olive-Adam dynamic. And honestly, that may be exactly what one want.Because sometimes an adaptation doesn’t need to surprise you.
